The move comes amid unresolved Mahagathbandhan seat-sharing talks, with differences persisting between RJD and Congress over allocation and chief ministerial candidate.
In a dramatic turn of events in Bihar politics, RJD leaders were asked to return party symbols just hours after receiving them at Lalu Prasad Yadav’s residence in Patna. This late-night development occurred following the return of Tejashwi Yadav from Delhi, creating waves within the party and political circles.
On Monday evening, a crowd of ticket aspirants gathered outside Lalu’s residence at 10 Circular Road. Some were called inside and reportedly emerged with yellow envelopes, indicating the party’s poll picks for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections 2025. Among those who received the symbols were Sunil Singh (Parbatta), a former JD(U) leader, and Narendra Kumar Singh alias Bogo, a multiple-term MLA from Matihani. Their selection was seen as a strategic move by Tejashwi Yadav to attract the Bhumihar community, a traditionally influential upper caste voter base that has supported the BJP-led NDA in the past.
Other sitting RJD MLAs such as Bhai Virendra, Chandrashekhar Yadav (Madhepura), and Israil Mansuri (Kanti) also reportedly collected symbols from the party supremo’s residence. However, in a sudden reversal, these leaders were later called back and asked to return the symbols, creating confusion and speculation about the party’s internal decision-making process. Sources indicated that leaders were not given clear reasons for this move, while some claimed that social media images showing leaders with symbols were AI-generated.
This political drama unfolds as the Mahagathbandhan parties struggle to finalise their seat-sharing arrangements for the upcoming polls. Reports suggest tension between RJD and Congress, with Lalu Prasad Yadav reportedly opposing Congress contesting more than 54 seats in the 243-member assembly. The Congress party, on the other hand, has remained non-committal regarding the chief ministerial candidate.
For context, the ruling NDA announced its seat-sharing on October 12, allocating 101 seats each to JD(U) and BJP, leaving remaining constituencies to smaller allies. Meanwhile, the first phase of polling in Bihar is scheduled for November 6, followed by the second phase on November 11, with vote counting on November 14.
The late-night recall of party symbols highlights the intense maneuvering and internal negotiations within the RJD as it gears up for a highly competitive election season. Political analysts suggest that this move is a prelude to strategic candidate announcements and could impact voter sentiment in key constituencies.
