In a deeply emotional moment for the Catholic world, Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. Elected on March 13, 2013, Pope Francis had made history as the first Jesuit pope and the first from the Southern Hemisphere, ushering in a new era of humility and reform within the Church.

His passing marks not just the end of a papacy, but the beginning of one of the most sacred and closely observed events in Catholicism — the election of a new pope.

What Happens After a Pope Dies?

With the death of Pope Francis, the Holy See becomes vacant. This triggers a series of traditional and carefully structured rituals that have remained largely unchanged over centuries.

The Vatican officially declares the position of pope vacant, and all Church governance by the Pope ceases. The Camerlengo, currently Cardinal Kevin Farrell, oversees the preparation for the election and ensures the Church continues basic operations during this interim period.

The Papal Conclave: How a New Pope Is Elected

The process to select the next pope is conducted through a sacred event called the Papal Conclave.

Gathering of Cardinals

Over 200 cardinals from nearly 70 countries are part of the Catholic Church’s senior leadership, but only 115 cardinals are eligible to vote, as per the rule introduced in 1975, which excludes cardinals aged 80 and above from the voting process.

These 115 cardinals, representing the global face of Catholicism, will convene in Vatican City to begin the spiritual and political task of choosing the next pope.

Oath of Secrecy and Locking of Doors

The Conclave is held inside the Sistine Chapel, under the magnificent frescoes painted by Michelangelo. Before the voting begins, all cardinals take a solemn oath of secrecy. This ensures the spiritual sanctity and protection from external influence.

Once the oath is administered, non-essential personnel are asked to leave, and the doors of the chapel are locked. No communication is permitted with the outside world until a new pope is chosen.

Voting Procedure Inside the Conclave

Each cardinal writes the name of their chosen candidate on a paper ballot, folds it, and places it into a chalice on the altar. Designated cardinals then collect and count the ballots in full view of the others.

A two-thirds majority is required for a candidate to be elected as pope. If the required number is not reached, the ballots are burned, and black smoke emerges from the Sistine Chapel chimney. This smoke is a signal to the outside world that the election remains inconclusive.

When a candidate finally receives the necessary votes, the ballots are burned again — this time producing white smoke, signaling the world that Habemus PapamWe have a pope.

Acceptance and First Appearance

Once elected, the chosen cardinal is asked:
"Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?"

If the answer is yes, the new pope chooses a papal name, often inspired by previous popes or saints. He is then taken to the Room of Tears, where he is dressed in the traditional white papal vestments.

Soon after, the senior cardinal deacon appears on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to make the formal announcement. The new pope then steps forward and delivers his first Urbi et Orbi blessingTo the City and to the World.

Who Could Be the Next Pope?

Speculation is already mounting over who might succeed Pope Francis. A number of prominent cardinals from various parts of the world are seen as leading contenders.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines)

At 66, Tagle is a known progressive and a favorite among reform-minded Catholics. He is aligned with the values and vision of Pope Francis and could become the first Asian pope.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin (Italy)

A 70-year-old diplomat and current Vatican Secretary of State, Parolin is widely respected for his moderate stance and could be chosen to maintain continuity with Pope Francis’ global vision.

Cardinal Péter Erdő (Hungary)

Known for his theological depth and leadership as former head of Europe’s bishops’ council, Erdő, 72, is a respected conservative choice.

Cardinal Raymond Burke (USA)

A controversial but charismatic figure, Burke, who is staunchly traditionalist, has often criticized Pope Francis. If chosen, it would signal a strong return to conservative Catholic values.

Cardinal Matteo Zuppi (Italy)

Zuppi is a close ally of Pope Francis and is linked with the Sant’Egidio Community, known for its humanitarian and peace efforts. His inclusive leadership style makes him a strong contender.

Cardinal Wim Eijk (Netherlands)

A former medical doctor and currently Archbishop of Utrecht, Eijk is known for his conservative views and deep doctrinal commitment.

Other Potential Candidates Include:

  • Cardinal Gerhard Müller (Germany)

  • Cardinal Angelo Scola (Italy)

  • Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco (Italy)

  • Cardinal Robert Sarah (Guinea)

  • Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith (Sri Lanka)

A Defining Moment for the Church

The death of Pope Francis opens the door to a pivotal moment in the 2,000-year-old history of the Catholic Church. The next pope will not only inherit the spiritual leadership of 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide but also face modern challenges — from declining Church attendance in Europe, political tensions, and the need for internal reform.

As the cardinals prepare to enter the Sistine Chapel, all eyes remain fixed on that small chimney, waiting for the white smoke and the moment that will change the course of Church history once again.
