In a bold move against the Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar, Prashant Kishor, the founder of the Jan Suraaj Party, has announced the launch of a signature campaign aimed at exposing what he perceives as the government's failures. The campaign will begin on May 11 in Kalyan Bigaha, the ancestral village of Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, located in Harnaut assembly segment of Nalanda district. This decision has added a new layer of political intrigue as Kishor seeks to challenge the myths surrounding the development claims of Nitish Kumar, especially within his home district.
Kishor, who has gained prominence for his role in political strategy, stated during his press conference that the campaign’s objective is to bring the truth to light regarding the state of affairs in Nitish Kumar’s own village. He challenged the claims that the CM had brought significant development to his home district, specifically targeting promises such as the Rs 2 lakh financial assistance to poor families. According to Kishor, despite the CM's declaration in the assembly that 94 lakh families in Bihar are eligible for this support, there is little evidence that these promises have been fulfilled. Kishor likened this unfulfilled promise to the much-discussed but unexecuted claim by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of Rs 15 lakh being deposited into every Indian’s bank account.
A key aspect of the signature campaign will be its focus on the alleged corruption within the state's administration. Kishor criticized the prevalent system of bribery that allegedly plagues even basic services like the creation of ration cards and issuance of land receipts. This practice, he argued, is causing immense trouble for common people, making it a focal point of his party's platform. Kishor further questioned the state government’s failures in promises like the allocation of two decimals of land to Dalit families practicing agriculture and the ongoing land survey, which he claims is riddled with corruption.
The Jan Suraaj Party leader’s words were particularly pointed when discussing the myth of Bihar's progress under Nitish Kumar’s leadership, especially in his home district. "We will expose the reality behind these so-called achievements, which have yet to show any tangible results for the people of Bihar," Kishor remarked. The campaign will seek to not only challenge the narrative of development but also offer an alternative vision for the state’s future.
Under the banner of the ‘Jan Suraj Udghosh Yatra’, Kishor embarked on a one-day tour in Nalanda, engaging with locals and drawing attention to the issues he believes are critical for the state's future. During his visit, Kishor was welcomed warmly by people in Bihar Sharif and Rahui, before addressing a large gathering at the Rajkiya Uchch Vidyalaya in Harnaut. At the rally, he appealed to the people of Nalanda, urging them not to vote for leaders who, according to him, have exploited the people and their resources. Instead, he called on them to vote for the future of their children, advocating for a government that represents the people’s interests.
Additionally, Kishor addressed the controversy surrounding threats of a defamation case from Bihar Minister Ashok Choudhary. Choudhary, a key ally of Nitish Kumar, had reportedly expressed intentions to sue Kishor for alleging that he purchased a ticket for his daughter, Shambhavi, to contest the elections. Kishor, however, remains undeterred, stating that the allegations he made regarding Choudhary and his daughter were commonly known and discussed across Bihar, implying that the claims are grounded in local knowledge and cannot be easily dismissed.
As the signature campaign against the Nitish Kumar government takes shape, the political landscape in Bihar is set for an intriguing contest, with Kishor seeking to redefine the narrative of governance in the state, particularly in the face of unfulfilled promises and alleged corruption. The launch of this campaign from Nitish Kumar’s own village adds a personal touch to the political challenge, with Kishor seeking to unravel the discrepancies between political rhetoric and the realities on the ground. The coming weeks will likely see an intensification of political activity in Bihar as Kishor mobilizes support and aims to build momentum for his party’s vision of change.
