As Mahakumbh 2025 approaches its grand conclusion with the final Maha Shivratri snan on February 26, railway stations across Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Banaras, and Patna have been placed on high alert to manage the massive influx of devotees. The Uttar Pradesh government and Indian Railways are implementing strict crowd control measures to ensure safe and smooth travel for millions of pilgrims arriving for the sacred dip at Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
Security Tightened at Prayagraj Railway Stations
With an estimated one crore devotees arriving daily, the Indian Railways and Uttar Pradesh Police have significantly increased security deployments at key railway stations, including Prayagraj Junction, Ayodhya, Banaras, and Patna. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) are patrolling stations to prevent overcrowding and maintain order.
Additionally, railway stations have been equipped with holding areas outside platforms to regulate the entry of passengers based on their scheduled departure times. According to a statement from the Railway Ministry, this initiative aims to enhance crowd management and prevent stampedes during peak hours.
Railway Ministry’s Crowd Management Measures
The Indian Railways has taken proactive steps to ensure seamless travel arrangements for devotees:
- Holding areas have been established at multiple railway stations under Northern Railway, North Central Railway, North Eastern Railway, and East Central Railway.
- Passengers will be allowed onto platforms only as per train departure schedules, reducing unnecessary congestion.
- Security personnel and volunteers have been stationed at key entry and exit points to assist travelers and ensure smooth boarding.
- Announcements and digital screens are displaying real-time updates on train schedules and crowd control measures.
UP Government’s Strict Monitoring and Security Measures
A high-level review meeting was conducted by Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh and DGP Prashant Kumar to assess preparedness for the final snan. Speaking to reporters, DGP Kumar assured that the state government is closely monitoring all aspects of traffic control, security, and crowd management.
Additionally, officials warned against misleading social media posts attempting to disrupt the sanctity of Mahakumbh 2025. Over 50 FIRs have been registered against individuals spreading misinformation, and strict action will be taken against offenders.
The Irrigation Department has also been instructed to increase the water level of the Ganga by removing silt to ensure a safe and seamless snan experience for devotees.
Massive Turnout Expected as Mahakumbh Nears Conclusion
The Mahakumbh 2025, which began on January 13, has already witnessed an unprecedented turnout of approximately 59 crore devotees. The final Maha Shivratri snan on February 26 is expected to push the total count beyond 60 crore, making it one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
Devotees from India and across the globe have been flocking to Prayagraj to participate in the sacred ritual, believing that a holy dip at Sangam during Mahakumbh washes away sins and grants salvation.
Conclusion
As Maha Shivratri snan marks the conclusion of Mahakumbh 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government, Indian Railways, and security agencies have intensified measures to manage the massive influx of devotees. The high alert at railway stations, establishment of holding areas, and enhanced security arrangements aim to ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage experience. Devotees are advised to follow official guidelines, plan their travel in advance, and cooperate with authorities for a hassle-free journey.
