Priyanka Gandhi, a senior Congress leader, has strongly condemned the Indian Government’s silence over the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, criticising what she called the lack of moral and diplomatic responsibility towards the people of Palestine. Her statement comes amid escalating violence in Gaza, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives, according to health authorities and international organisations.
Speaking on Tuesday, Priyanka Gandhi described the current situation in Gaza as a humanitarian catastrophe, pointing out the destruction of civilian areas, schools, and hospitals in the Israeli military campaign. She particularly condemned the killing of five Al Jazeera journalists, calling it a cold blooded murder and a heinous crime committed on Palestinian soil. She said that targeting journalists who risk their lives to report from conflict zones is an attack on press freedom and the truth itself.
Priyanka Gandhi argued that as the world watches in horror, India’s silence sends a wrong signal internationally. She stressed that the Indian Government, which historically stood for non-alignment and peace diplomacy, must take a firm stance to condemn indiscriminate killings and call for an immediate ceasefire.
The remarks have come at a time when the United Nations and several international human rights groups have condemned Israel for strikes that killed members of the media in Gaza. Priyanka Gandhi echoed these concerns, emphasising that such acts may amount to war crimes under international law.
Her statement also reflects a broader opposition sentiment in India, where several Members of Parliament and political figures have expressed solidarity with Palestine. Many have urged the government to reactivate diplomatic committees and take a more proactive role in international negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
She further stated that India’s moral voice on the global stage is being eroded by remaining neutral in times of clear humanitarian crises. In her view, the Indian Parliament should actively engage with the Palestinian cause, reaffirming India’s historic support for a two-state solution and the right of Palestinians to live in peace.
Political analysts believe her comments are likely to intensify debates in the coming Parliament sessions, especially as public awareness of the Gaza crisis grows. Opposition parties are expected to use the issue to question the government’s foreign policy direction and human rights commitments.
The Gaza war has so far resulted in widespread destruction and a massive humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations reporting shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. International pressure on Israel is mounting, but the conflict shows no signs of resolution. Against this backdrop, Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks underscore the demand for urgent action and a clear diplomatic position from New Delhi.
By linking India’s global reputation to its stance on the Gaza conflict, Priyanka Gandhi has effectively placed the government under the spotlight. Whether this will push the administration towards a more assertive position remains to be seen, but the opposition’s united front on the issue indicates that the matter will stay politically relevant in the coming weeks.
