The tragic deaths have left their community in mourning, as their bodies were brought back to Pune for final rites.
Kaustubh Ganbote and Santosh Jagdale, childhood friends and residents of Pune, had planned a much-awaited vacation with their families to Kashmir, seeking serenity in the scenic valley of Pahalgam. However, this joyous trip turned into a nightmare on April 22, when a terror attack claimed the lives of 26 people, including the two friends.
It was a devastating blow for the families and the city of Pune, which had never imagined such a brutal fate would strike so close to home. Both men were shot dead in front of their wives and children, leaving their families and friends traumatised.
Who Were Kaustubh and Santosh?
Kaustubh Ganbote, a farsan (snack) manufacturer, had spent most of his life dedicated to growing his small business. He rarely travelled, but this trip was a long-overdue moment of joy for him and his wife. His factory was located on the Kondhwa-Saswad Road, and he had recently built a house nearby. Kaustubh was a jovial, kind-hearted man, known for helping others in his Rasta Peth neighbourhood.
Just eight days before the attack, he had shared his excitement about the Kashmir trip with his close friend Sunil More. “It was the first time he and his wife were stepping out of the city,” More recounted tearfully. Ganbote had recently become a grandfather and was enjoying this new phase of life.
His friend Santosh Jagdale, who ran an interior design business, was an explorer at heart. He had always loved to travel and experience new places, and it was he who likely encouraged the Kashmir trip. He also assisted Ganbote in marketing his snack products, showcasing the deep bond they shared beyond just friendship.
A Childhood Bond Cut Short
The friendship between Ganbote and Jagdale spanned decades. From living in narrow lanes of Pune to growing their families, the two had journeyed through many of life’s ups and downs together. Sadly, that journey ended in horror and violence, leaving a void that will be hard to fill.
Asavari, Jagdale’s daughter, recalled the terrifying moments after the shooting. “We were hiding behind a tent after the firing incident, and the terrorist came to my father, opened fire at him, and later they shot Santosh uncle, who was nearby,” she recounted. The families were forced to flee in panic, leaving behind their loved ones.
Mourning in Pune
The bodies of Ganbote and Jagdale reached Pune International Airport around 5:30 am and were then transported to their respective residences — Karvenagar for Jagdale and Kondhwa for Ganbote — where friends, family, and neighbours gathered to pay their final respects.
The atmosphere was filled with grief and disbelief. People who knew them from their localities described them as warm, dependable, and hardworking individuals. Their tragic end has sent shockwaves across the community, bringing into sharp focus the risks faced by civilians in conflict-prone regions.
Ganbote’s Story of Survival
Ganbote’s life was not without hardship. He had once suffered severe burn injuries in a tempo accident over two decades ago, an incident he called his "second birth". His survival back then had become an inspiring story of resilience for his friends and family.
This trip to Kashmir, for him, was more than just a vacation — it was a celebration of life after years of hard work and sacrifice. Tragically, his life ended in an act of senseless violence, just when he had begun to enjoy the fruits of his labour.
Jagdale: A Passionate Explorer
Santosh Jagdale was passionate about discovering new places, and Kashmir had always been on his list. He was known to be a dedicated family man, and his enthusiasm for life was evident in every trip he planned.
His younger brother Avinash spoke about how Santosh never hesitated to step in and help his friends, especially Kaustubh, in his business. “He believed in growing together,” Avinash shared, remembering his brother’s generous spirit.
A Stark Reminder of Civilian Vulnerability
The Pahalgam attack is a stark reminder of the dangers that continue to lurk in some of India’s most scenic tourist destinations. Despite repeated assurances of safety, civilians continue to bear the brunt of such terror strikes.
This tragedy raises serious questions about security arrangements in high-tourism zones like Kashmir. It also underscores the need for stronger protection mechanisms for tourists, who shouldn’t have to fear for their lives while travelling within their own country.
National Outrage and Calls for Justice
As news of the killings spread, public outrage and grief poured in from across the country. Political leaders and public figures demanded swift action and justice for the victims. The central and state governments were urged to tighten security and apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.
This attack is not just a personal loss for the families but a national tragedy that highlights the vulnerability of ordinary citizens in conflict regions.
A Final Goodbye
The final rites of Kaustubh Ganbote and Santosh Jagdale were conducted in Pune, amid emotional farewells and community mourning. Their deaths will not only be remembered for the tragedy they represent but also for the friendship, dedication, and kindness these two men embodied throughout their lives.
Their story serves as a sobering reminder of the impact of terrorism, not just in terms of politics and security, but in the lives of everyday people — fathers, husbands, businessmen, and friends — whose dreams were cut short too soon.
