-
Union Minister Vaishnaw confirms realignment of Pune-Nashik railway route to protect GMRT zone.
-
Pune railway station to get world-class upgrades including four new platforms.
-
Six Pune region stations set for redevelopment, and new Vande Bharat train discussed.
The Pune-Nashik semi-high-speed railway project is moving closer to execution as Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that a realignment of the rail route is being finalised. This realignment is crucial to protect the operations of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) located at Khodad near Narayangaon, an area scientifically sensitive due to its role in global radio astronomy.
Protecting GMRT: Scientific Significance Over Speed
The original alignment of the Pune-Nashik railway corridor would have passed through a 15-kilometre restricted zone surrounding the GMRT in Khodad village. This raised concerns among the scientific community, as the GMRT operates in the 150-1420 MHz frequency band and consists of 30 massive antennas each with a diameter of 45 metres.
The GMRT, under the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), is one of the world's largest and most sensitive radio telescopes. It has been developed with collaboration from over 23 countries and plays a crucial role in space research and radio wave studies.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that the government is committed to protecting the observatory. “The GMRT holds great scientific significance. Its operations could be hampered by the earlier alignment, so a realignment is being prepared to avoid any interference,” he said.
The new plan will ensure the railway line avoids the sensitive zone, and once the Maharashtra government approves the realignment, construction will begin.
Major Railway Infrastructure Boost for Pune
While speaking in Pune, the Minister also announced that Pune railway station is set to receive a major upgrade, transforming it into a world-class facility. This includes the addition of four new platforms and improvements in passenger amenities, connectivity, and design aesthetics.
He emphasised Pune’s historical, cultural, and industrial importance in the state of Maharashtra and said it deserves infrastructure that reflects its growing prominence.
New Express Trains Flagged Off and Station Redevelopment Plans
During his visit, Vaishnaw flagged off two new express trains:
-
Hadapsar–Jodhpur Express
-
MGR Chennai Central–Bhagat Ki Kothi Express
These trains aim to improve regional and inter-state connectivity and meet the growing demand for rail transport from Pune and surrounding regions.
In addition, he revealed that redevelopment plans for six key railway stations — Pune, Hadapsar, Khadki, Shivajinagar, Uruli Kanchan, and Alandi — are in their final stages. These stations are expected to receive infrastructure overhauls that include modern architecture, seamless passenger movement, and increased safety measures.
Vande Bharat Train on the Cards Between Pune and Nagpur
Another significant announcement from the Railway Minister was the potential introduction of a Vande Bharat train on the Pune-Nagpur route. Discussions regarding this project were held with Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. The Vande Bharat Express, India’s premier semi-high-speed train, is expected to boost intra-state connectivity and cut down travel time drastically between the two important cities.
Scientific Responsibility and Development Go Hand in Hand
The GMRT issue brings into focus the balance between scientific priorities and infrastructure growth. The Indian Railways' decision to revise its original alignment underscores its willingness to support globally relevant scientific installations without stalling economic and infrastructural development.
This move is being seen as a positive collaboration between scientific communities and policymakers, where nation-building projects are adjusted rather than imposed on sensitive zones. The project realignment will help in preserving India’s status as a key player in global space and astronomy research.
Pune-Nashik Railway: A Gamechanger for Maharashtra
Once executed, the Pune-Nashik semi-high-speed rail will:
-
Reduce travel time between two of Maharashtra’s major cities.
-
Improve economic exchanges and industrial supply chains.
-
Offer passengers a faster, smoother, and more efficient commute option.
-
Promote the idea of satellite economic zones across the corridor.
The completion of the realignment plan is a key milestone and will allow work to resume after prolonged delays caused by scientific objections and administrative hurdles.
Conclusion
With the realignment to safeguard GMRT nearing completion, and multiple railway upgrades lined up in Pune, the Union Railway Ministry appears keen on enhancing Maharashtra’s railway infrastructure while respecting the country’s scientific assets.
Key developments like new express trains, station redevelopment, and proposed Vande Bharat services point toward a future-ready railway ecosystem that aims to connect major regions swiftly and sustainably.
This balanced approach between development and science protection sets a new benchmark for infrastructure planning in sensitive zones — one that may well serve as a template for future projects across India.
