On August 7, 2024, Pune recorded seven additional cases of Zika virus, bringing the total number of infections to 73 since the first case was reported on June 20. This increase follows heavy rainfall across Maharashtra that triggered significant flooding in several parts of the district. The adverse weather conditions are believed to have contributed to the spread of the virus, which is transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes.

Fatalities and Health Conditions

Among the 73 confirmed cases, there have been four deaths involving senior citizens aged between 68 to 78 years. While these individuals had pre-existing health conditions that contributed to their deaths, the health authorities confirmed that the Zika virus was not the direct cause. These deaths underscore the severe impact of the virus on those with underlying health issues.

Pregnant Women Under Close Monitoring

The outbreak has notably affected 26 pregnant women, who are being closely monitored by health officials. Zika virus infection during pregnancy is known to cause microcephaly and other congenital malformations, which makes careful monitoring crucial to manage any potential risks to the unborn children.

Health Measures and Public Advisory

In response to the rising cases, Pune’s Health Department has implemented several measures to curb the outbreak. These include enhanced surveillance, widespread fumigation, and efforts to prevent mosquito breeding. Health officials are advising residents to seek testing if they experience symptoms such as fever, rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, or headache, which typically last 2–7 days.

Symptoms and Risks of Zika Virus

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), most individuals with Zika virus infection experience mild symptoms, but serious conditions such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, neuropathy, and myelitis can occur. For pregnant women, the virus poses significant risks including microcephaly and other severe birth defects.

Continued Vigilance and Public Health Efforts

The Pune Health Department continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures to avoid further spread of the virus. The department will also collaborate with the Maharashtra government’s death audit committee to review the details of the deceased cases. As the situation evolves, officials emphasize the importance of community engagement in controlling the outbreak and safeguarding public health.
