In his annual news conference and call-in show on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin refuted claims that the ousting of Bashar Assad, his long-time ally in Syria, had damaged Russia's prestige. Putin used the four-and-a-half-hour event to assert his authority, offering responses on issues ranging from military tactics to domestic consumer prices.
Putin Defends Russia's Goals in Syria
Putin emphatically stated that Russia has achieved its objectives in Syria, highlighting the ongoing presence of groups that once opposed Assad's government but have since undergone internal changes. He questioned the Western involvement with these groups, implying their transformation. "If they are terrorist organizations, why are you getting involved? That means they have changed," Putin remarked. His comments reflect Russia's enduring influence in the region despite the challenges posed by the changing political landscape.
Plans to Meet Assad
In his first public comments about Bashar Assad’s situation since his fall from power, Putin confirmed that he had not yet met the former Syrian president but had plans to do so. He also mentioned that he would discuss the case of Austin Tice, an American journalist who disappeared in Syria 12 years ago, during the planned meeting. Tice’s mother had recently written a letter to Putin, requesting his help in locating the missing journalist. Putin stated, "We also can pose the question to people who control the situation on the ground in Syria."
Russia's Diplomatic and Military Interests in Syria
While Putin’s administration has strived to maintain a stronghold in Syria, particularly with its military air and naval bases, the evolving political situation poses challenges. Russia’s relations with Syrian rebels and efforts to negotiate the extension of its base leases have become increasingly important, yet the uncertainty surrounding Assad's future leaves questions about Moscow's influence in Syria. Putin, however, insisted that Russia’s involvement, which began in 2015 with an air campaign supporting Assad, was successful in dismantling terrorist groups and fulfilling its initial military goals.
Ongoing Influence Despite Challenges
Despite the complex dynamics and changing alliances in Syria, Putin’s narrative suggests that Russia remains a key player. He dismissed the idea that Assad’s fall had weakened Moscow’s position in the region, maintaining that Russia had succeeded in its mission to defeat terrorist factions operating within Syria. The Russian-Syrian relationship, particularly concerning military support, continues to be a central element of Moscow's foreign policy.
