What's covered under the Article:

  1. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the US plan to acquire Greenland is “none of our business,” distancing Moscow from the controversy.

  2. Putin cited historical precedents, including Russia selling Alaska to the US in 1867 and Denmark selling the Virgin Islands in 1917.

  3. Trump expressed interest in Greenland for US national security at Davos but insisted he would not use military force, while Greenland advised citizens to prepare for crises.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly stated that the United States’ efforts to acquire Greenland are “none of our business,” downplaying the geopolitical controversy involving Washington, Denmark, and NATO allies. Speaking during a televised Security Council meeting on Wednesday, Putin emphasised that Greenland’s future is a matter for the countries directly involved.

“What happens to Greenland is none of our business,” Putin said, while also noting that Denmark has historically treated Greenland as a colony, sometimes harshly. He highlighted historical examples of territorial sales, recalling that Denmark sold the Virgin Islands to the US in 1917 and Russia sold Alaska to the US in 1867 for USD 7.2 million, suggesting that territorial changes between countries have precedents.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland, citing the territory as crucial to US national security. Trump stated he wants to secure “right, title, and ownership” of Greenland but clarified he would not use military force. Criticising European allies, Trump also stated that NATO should not obstruct US expansionism. He described Greenland as “cold and poorly located” but justified US interest by highlighting America’s role in saving Europe during World War II and decades of support to NATO allies.

In response to rising concerns, Greenland’s government advised citizens to prepare for emergencies. It published a handbook in English and Greenlandic instructing residents to stock enough food, water, fuel, and supplies to last five days. Residents like Tony Jakobsen in Nuuk prepared by purchasing essential items, expressing that while Trump’s statements seemed like threats, it was prudent to be ready.

The situation underscores a mix of geopolitical tensions, historical context, and public concern, as Trump continues to assert US strategic interests while Putin and Russia remain neutral. Greenland, though a Danish territory, finds itself in the spotlight, balancing local preparedness with global diplomatic discussions.

In conclusion, Putin’s remarks make it clear that Russia is not involved or concerned with Greenland’s fate, even as Trump publicly pursues acquisition, citing US national security and historical precedent. Greenlanders, meanwhile, are taking proactive steps to ensure safety in the midst of international speculation and political rhetoric at the Davos 2026 summit.
