Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav celebrated his 78th birthday on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, in Patna amid festive celebrations organised by family, party workers and supporters. The celebration turned into a show of strength for social justice and harmony, hallmarks of Mr. Yadav’s political career.
The main celebration was held at 10, Circular Road, the official residence of his wife and former CM Rabri Devi, where Mr. Yadav cut a cake and shared it with everyone. Senior party leaders and family members, including his son and Leader of Opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, were present at the event.
The party commemorated the occasion as “Social Harmony Day”, with food and book distribution drives aimed at weaker sections of society, and a state-wide tree plantation campaign to promote environmental responsibility.
A Grand Celebration for a Political Icon
One of the highlights of the day was the arrival of a 78-kg cake made of laddus and sweets, brought on 18 carts by RJD leader Anil Jaiswal, accompanied by a traditional music band. Lalu Yadav cut the cake using a ceremonial sword, symbolising strength and legacy.
The Youth RJD workers also organised celebrations at the party’s State office, which was decorated with lights, posters and banners. Celebrations were not limited to Patna but were echoed in RJD offices and local constituencies across Bihar.
Message of Social Justice
In his birthday address, Lalu Yadav urged RJD workers to continue working for the marginalised and deprived communities and promote the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb, or communal harmony. He emphasised the importance of social justice, secularism and mutual respect in nation-building.
“Everyone should work together to strengthen the Ganga-Jamuni culture and the environment of brotherhood in the country. We have to be vigilant at every level to strengthen the flow of social justice and secularism,” he said.
His son, Tejashwi Yadav, spoke passionately about the party’s activities and underlined that social justice was the cornerstone of the RJD’s political ideology. He mentioned that by sharing meals with Dalit communities, distributing books, and planting trees in marginalised areas, RJD workers had upheld Lalu Yadav’s vision.
Support from Party Leaders and Family
Several prominent RJD leaders participated in the celebration including Uday Narayan Choudhary, Abdul Bari Siddiqui, Manoj Kumar Jha, and Sanjay Yadav. Their presence underlined the unity within the party and its continued relevance in Bihar’s political landscape.
These leaders credited Mr. Yadav with redefining political empowerment of backward classes and pioneering the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations that ensured job reservations for OBCs.
Wishes from National Leaders
Birthday wishes for Lalu Prasad Yadav poured in from across the country. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shared a warm message on X (formerly Twitter), describing their bond as rooted in shared values and the long-standing struggle for social justice.
“Heartfelt birthday wishes to Bihar’s former Chief Minister and RJD president, Lalu Prasad Yadav Ji. The bond between us has never been limited to politics — it has been a deep human connection, rooted in shared values and the struggle for social justice.”
He added,
“Your life has been full of struggles, yet you have always raised your voice for those who are often ignored, with strength and courage.”
Similarly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, a strong proponent of Dravidian and social justice politics, posted a tribute calling Lalu Yadav a pioneering force in Indian politics.
“By firmly advancing the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations and standing strong against communal forces, he reshaped the national discourse on social justice. Wishing him good health and a long life,” Mr. Stalin wrote.
Endorsements of His Legacy
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren also extended his wishes and highlighted Mr. Yadav’s lifelong commitment to uplifting the poor, the exploited and the deprived sections of society. These cross-party wishes reflect the national respect Lalu Yadav commands, especially in the sphere of social justice.
Lalu Yadav remains an influential figure in Indian politics, known for his grassroots connection, rustic charisma, and a firm stand on secularism and caste equity. His birthday celebrations reaffirmed that his political ideology continues to inspire a large section of Indian society, particularly in northern and eastern India
