Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, sharply reacted to the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Sunday, February 9, 2025. This resignation came after nearly two years of ethnic violence that has ravaged the northeastern state, with more than 250 deaths and thousands left homeless since May 2023. The violence erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities over issues surrounding the Scheduled Tribes status and other socio-political factors.

Gandhi’s Criticism of Modi’s Role

Rahul Gandhi did not mince words in his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of allowing CM Biren Singh to remain in power despite the widespread violence and loss of life. Gandhi took to X (formerly Twitter), posting, "For nearly two years, BJP's CM Biren Singh instigated division in Manipur. PM Modi allowed him to continue despite the violence, loss of life, and destruction of the idea of India in Manipur. The resignation of CM Biren Singh shows that mounting public pressure, the SC investigation, and the no-confidence motion by the Congress have forced a reckoning.”

This statement highlights the public dissatisfaction with the prolonged unrest, pointing to Singh’s resignation as a result of intense political and legal pressure. Gandhi emphasized that the priority now must be to restore peace and begin healing the wounds of the people of Manipur, stressing the need for PM Modi to visit Manipur and outline a clear roadmap to restore normalcy.

Manipur CM Resigns Amid Unrest

Singh’s resignation came just a day before the commencement of the Manipur Assembly's budget session. In his resignation letter, Singh expressed his commitment to maintaining the territorial integrity of Manipur and safeguarding the security of its people, amid the ongoing unrest. Singh also mentioned the importance of Manipur’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

The violence in Manipur was triggered by a rally held by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, 2023, which called for the Meitei community to be included in the Scheduled Tribes list following a Manipur High Court ruling. The rally resulted in clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which quickly escalated into widespread violence. Nearly two years of unrest followed, with both sides suffering heavy losses, leaving deep scars on the region.

Gandhi Urges Immediate Action

Gandhi emphasized the urgent need for PM Modi to visit Manipur immediately. He pointed out that despite the ongoing turmoil, Modi had not visited the state. Gandhi stated, “PM Modi should have visited Manipur by now. It’s high time he listened to the people and acted to resolve the situation.”

This plea underscores the growing political pressure on the central government to take direct action to address the Manipur crisis and bring peace to the region.

BJP’s Defense of Singh's Resignation

On the other hand, Manipur BJP President A. Sharda Devi defended Singh’s resignation, stating that it was a decision made with the future of Manipur in mind. She assured that the BJP party remained united, and that Singh’s resignation was a strategic move to preserve the integrity and security of Manipur. According to Devi, the resignation was not a sign of division but rather a necessary step for the state’s recovery.

The resignation of CM N. Biren Singh marks a significant moment in the ongoing Manipur unrest. It reflects a response to both internal and external pressures, including the Supreme Court investigation and a no-confidence motion by the Congress.
