Rahul Gandhi has strongly criticized RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat for his controversial statement that India achieved 'true independence' only after the consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. In a sharp rebuke, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, described Bhagwat's remarks as treason and an insult to every single Indian. The Congress leader argued that Bhagwat's statement undermines the freedom fighters of India and attacks the Constitution, calling it an audacious assertion that could not be tolerated.

Rahul Gandhi's Response to Bhagwat's Remarks

Speaking at the inauguration of the new Congress headquarters on January 15, Gandhi slammed Bhagwat for suggesting that India's independence in 1947 was incomplete and only realized after the Ram temple consecration. Gandhi stated, "What he said yesterday is treason because it is stating that the Constitution is invalid, and the fight against the British was invalid. In any other country, he would be arrested and tried." He further emphasized, "To say that India did not get independence in 1947 is an insult to every single Indian."

During the event, Gandhi also accused the BJP, whose ideological mentor is the RSS, of undermining the national flag and the Constitution. He expressed concern that the ruling party's vision of India is fundamentally different from the Congress's ideology. He claimed that the BJP and RSS are trying to push India into a model where power is concentrated in the hands of one individual or a secret society, undermining democratic values.

According to Gandhi, the Congress party is the only one capable of challenging this ideology. He highlighted that Congress’s ideological roots date back thousands of years and have continuously fought against the RSS's vision for India. "The only party that can stop them is the Congress party," Gandhi added.

The Bigger Conflict: BJP, RSS, and India's Institutions

Gandhi took it further by stating that the fight against the BJP and RSS is not a fair fight. He remarked that these organizations have captured every institution of the country and are manipulating the system for their benefit. "We are now fighting the BJP, the RSS, and the Indian State itself," Gandhi said, highlighting the scale of the ideological battle.

Mohan Bhagwat’s Controversial Statement

On the other hand, Mohan Bhagwat had earlier defended his controversial remark during an event in Indore. Speaking after presenting the National Devi Ahilya Award to Champat Rai, general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Bhagwat asserted that India attained 'true independence' on the day of the Ram temple consecration. He stated that this day should be celebrated as the ‘Pratishtha Dwadashi’, recognizing the country’s long history of facing external attacks.

Bhagwat insisted that the Ram temple movement was never meant to oppose anyone but to awaken India’s self-identity and promote its strength on the global stage. He pointed out that there was no discord in the country during the Ram temple consecration last year, indicating national unity despite the highly charged nature of the event.

Conclusion: The Political Divide

The exchange between Rahul Gandhi and Mohan Bhagwat highlights the deep political divide in India today. While Gandhi sees Bhagwat’s remarks as an attack on India’s historical struggle for independence and its democratic institutions, Bhagwat defends his statement as a reflection of India’s growing sense of self-awareness and cultural resurgence. As the debate continues, it underscores the ideological rift between Congress and RSS, with both sides claiming to represent the true spirit of India.
