Rahul Gandhi defends his brother-in-law Robert Vadra after the ED filed a chargesheet in a high-profile land scam case, calling it politically motivated.
-
The Congress leader says the charges are part of a pattern of harassment and slander against the Gandhi-Vadra family by the ruling party.

The Enforcement Directorate claims Vadra illegally acquired land in Haryana and Bikaner; the Vadra camp denies any wrongdoing and vows legal battle.
New Delhi, July 18, 2025: In a strong show of support, Rahul Gandhi on Thursday publicly defended Robert Vadra, his brother-in-law, after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a chargesheet against Vadra in connection with alleged irregularities in land deals in Haryana and Rajasthan.
In a post shared on social media, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “I stand with Robert, Priyanka, and their children as they face yet another onslaught of malicious, politically motivated slander and harassment.”
What the ED Alleges
The ED’s chargesheet reportedly details irregular land transactions involving Vadra’s companies between 2009 and 2012, particularly in Bikaner (Rajasthan) and Gurugram (Haryana). The agency claims that Vadra’s firms acquired land at below-market rates using front entities, and later sold them for massive profits, violating the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The probe, which has been ongoing for several years, alleges that the land was illegally allotted, and the deals were carried out in violation of zoning laws and land use permissions. The chargesheet runs over 5,000 pages and includes bank records, digital communications, and statements from former bureaucrats.
Congress Calls It a Witch-Hunt
Reacting to the development, the Congress party dismissed the chargesheet as another episode in a series of political vendettas. “This is a textbook case of misusing agencies to target opponents. Robert Vadra has always cooperated with the investigation and will continue to do so,” said Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera.
He added that this was not about legal facts, but “a desperate attempt to shift the national narrative away from real issues like unemployment, inflation, and the NEET-UG scandal.”
Rahul Gandhi: ‘We Will Not Be Intimidated’
Rahul Gandhi’s statement is seen as both a personal and political message. “They are attacking our family because we speak the truth. But let me be clear: we will not be silenced or intimidated,” he said.
He further claimed that the Modi government has made it a pattern to weaponize institutions like the ED and CBI against Opposition leaders ahead of every election cycle. “Be it Mamata Banerjee’s kin, Sharad Pawar’s nephew, or Hemant Soren—anyone who opposes this regime is hounded,” he added.
Robert Vadra’s Response
Robert Vadra, a businessman and the husband of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, issued a statement shortly after the chargesheet was filed, saying, “I have full faith in the judiciary and the truth will prevail. These are baseless allegations intended to defame me and my family. I have appeared before the ED over 20 times and provided all documentation asked for.”
Vadra also said he is consulting legal experts and will challenge the chargesheet in court.
Priyanka Gandhi Maintains Silence—For Now
While Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has not yet issued a public comment, sources close to the Gandhi family say she is “deeply hurt but resolute.” Congress insiders expect her to speak out during a scheduled rally in Uttar Pradesh next week.
BJP Hits Back
The BJP, for its part, welcomed the ED action, claiming it was long overdue. “For too long, this family believed they were above the law. The facts are out, and now the courts will decide,” said BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur also chimed in, saying, “Rahul Gandhi should stop hiding behind emotional statements and let the law take its course. If Robert Vadra is innocent, let him prove it in court.”
What Happens Next?
With the chargesheet now filed, a special PMLA court in Delhi will decide on taking cognizance of the matter. If accepted, the court will summon Vadra and other accused to appear for framing of charges.
Legal experts believe that given the complexity of the case and the number of entities involved, the trial could stretch for years. However, if convicted, Vadra could face severe penalties, including imprisonment and seizure of assets.
Backdrop of Political Tensions
The development comes at a time when the Opposition is ramping up its INDIA bloc efforts to take on the BJP in several upcoming state polls. It also coincides with Rahul Gandhi’s renewed Bharat Jodo campaign 2.0, in which he is raising issues of institutional decay and democratic backsliding.
Many analysts see the timing of the ED chargesheet as politically sensitive. “This is clearly a high-stakes moment, both for the Congress’s internal unity and its public perception,” says political analyst Neerja Chowdhury.
Conclusion: Political Storm Brewing
Rahul Gandhi’s open backing of Robert Vadra has turned the spotlight once again on the intersection of law, politics, and family legacy in Indian democracy. As the court proceedings begin and political rhetoric heats up, this case is poised to become a key flashpoint in the larger national debate over governance, transparency, and vendetta politics.
