Key Points:
Rahul Gandhi will appear in the MP-MLA court in Sultanpur for a defamation case involving remarks about Amit Shah.
The case was filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra, accusing Gandhi of making objectionable comments in 2018.
The Supreme Court recently dismissed pleas related to the NEET-UG paper leak, which the BJP linked to Gandhi.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to appear before the MP-MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday for a hearing related to a defamation case. According to Congress district president Abhishek Singh Rana, Gandhi is expected to arrive at Lucknow airport at 9 am on Friday before proceeding to Sultanpur for the court appearance.
This court visit comes in response to a defamation case filed by local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Mishra on August 4, 2018. The case alleges that Gandhi made objectionable remarks about Amit Shah, the current Union Home Minister and then BJP president, in 2018. Although the court granted bail to Gandhi in this case on February 20 this year, Special Magistrate Shubham Verma has summoned Gandhi to record his statement on July 26.
The Defamation Case Background
The defamation case originated from a lawsuit filed in 2018 by BJP leader Vijay Mishra. Mishra accused Gandhi of making derogatory remarks about Amit Shah during a press conference held in Bengaluru on May 8, 2018, during the Karnataka elections. Gandhi had alleged that the BJP, which claims to uphold honest and clean politics, had a party president who was an “accused” in a murder case. Shah was the BJP president at the time Gandhi made these remarks.

Recent Developments and BJP Allegations
Earlier this week, on Wednesday (July 24), the BJP accused Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, of undermining trust in India’s examination system following the NEET-UG paper leak at a few locations. The BJP questioned whether Gandhi would apologize following the Supreme Court’s verdict on the matter. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court dismissed the pleas seeking the cancellation and re-test of the NEET-UG exam. The court found no evidence to conclude that the exam was “vitiated” due to a systemic breach of its sanctity, stating that the leak occurred only in a few cities.
Conclusion
Rahul Gandhi’s upcoming appearance in the Sultanpur court underscores the ongoing legal and political challenges he faces. The defamation case, filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra, centers around remarks made about Amit Shah during the 2018 Karnataka elections. As Gandhi prepares for his court appearance, the recent Supreme Court ruling on the NEET-UG exam adds another layer to the political discourse, with the BJP accusing Gandhi of eroding public confidence in the examination system. As the legal proceedings unfold, the outcome will be closely watched, reflecting the intersection of politics, law, and public opinion in India.
