What's covered under the Article:

  1. Rahul Gandhi questioned India’s diplomatic handling of the US, raising concerns over the absence of Prime Minister Modi at Trump’s inauguration.
  2. His remarks in Lok Sabha led to a sharp rebuttal from the government, with Kiren Rijiju calling it unsubstantiated.
  3. The Ministry of External Affairs addressed the issue, mentioning upcoming discussions for a potential Modi visit to the US.

In the Lok Sabha on February 3, 2025, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi sparked a controversy with his remarks about India’s foreign policy towards the United States, particularly regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s absence at Donald Trump’s inauguration. During the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address, Gandhi questioned why India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar had to attend the event, suggesting that India’s diplomatic system should be robust enough to prevent such situations.

Gandhi suggested that if India had a better "production system," the American President would have visited India first, and Prime Minister Modi would have been invited to the event, implying that India should be at the center of such international discussions. His comments appeared to criticize the BJP government’s foreign policy, suggesting that the Prime Minister's presence at international events was compromised due to diplomatic shortcomings.

These remarks triggered a strong response from the ruling party. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju objected to Gandhi’s statement, calling it unsubstantiated and baseless, pointing out that such comments should not be made without verification. In response, Gandhi jokingly apologized, saying, “I apologize for disturbing your peace of mind.”

The controversy comes as India and the US work towards deepening their bilateral relations. The Ministry of External Affairs had recently announced that efforts were underway to organize a visit by Prime Minister Modi to the US, which would aim to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

The ongoing Budget Session of Parliament, which started with President Droupadi Murmu’s address on January 31, 2025, and continues until February 13, is marked by high political drama. Meanwhile, Union Budget 2025, presented on February 1, further fuels the political discourse as India’s relationship with global powers remains a key area of focus.
