  • Opposition leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, backed Rudy, while Balyan had support from BJP top brass and regional Jat leaders from UP and Haryana.

  • Election saw 707 votes cast, 692 valid, with notable political figures from multiple parties casting votes in this fiercely contested election.

The Constitution Club of India (CCI) witnessed one of its most fiercely contested elections in recent years, as BJP leaders Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Sanjeev Balyan locked horns for the prestigious post of secretary (administration). The battle, marked by intense campaigning and last-minute political maneuvering, extended into the early hours of the morning, with counting concluding past midnight.

After a nail-biting 25 rounds of counting, Rajiv Pratap Rudy secured 354 votes, while Sanjeev Balyan garnered 290 votes. Rudy further strengthened his tally with 38 postal ballots, bringing his total to 392 votes, ultimately clinching victory by a comfortable margin of 102 votes.

In his victory speech, Rudy, a former union minister who served under both Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi, expressed gratitude to voters across party lines, stating, “People have gone beyond party barriers and voted for my team and me. The work we have done over the last two and a half decades has finally been recognised.”

The contest, often described as BJP vs BJP, drew significant attention from political circles, with prominent leaders like Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP chief JP Nadda, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, and several MPs across party lines arriving to cast their votes.

A total of 707 votes were cast, out of which around 15 were declared invalid, leaving 692 valid votes, including 37 postal ballots. Initially, the race was neck and neck, but momentum swung decisively in Rudy’s favor when the opposition bloc consolidated its support behind him. Sources revealed that Sonia Gandhi personally assured Rudy of Congress backing, and leaders from the Samajwadi Party were similarly urged to vote in his favor.

According to senior political observers, opposition consolidation proved to be the deciding factor. The BJP’s top leadership openly backed Balyan, who was contesting his first CCI election after becoming a member eight years ago. Rudy, in contrast, had over 25 years of experience in club administration. Balyan enjoyed significant support from Jat leaders and regional political heavyweights from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, while Rudy had the backing of the influential Thakur lobby.

In addition to the secretary (administration) post, the elections also decided 11 executive member positions, with 14 candidates in the fray. Former BJP MP Pradeep Gandhi emerged as the top winner with a margin of 507 votes, followed closely by former Congress MP Jasbir Singh Gill with 502 votes. Other winners included TMC MP Prasun Banerjee, former BJD MP Kalikesh Singh Deo, Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda, RSP leader NK Premachandran, Samajwadi Party MP Akshay Yadav, Shiv Sena MP Srirang Appa Barne, former BJP MP Naresh Agarwal, and BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Pradeep Kumar Verma from Jharkhand.

The Constitution Club of India, founded by members of the Constituent Assembly, has historically been more than just a social gathering space—it has acted as a political microcosm where alliances are forged, influence is tested, and rivalries play out. This year’s election showcased a dramatic clash between seasoned political experience and emerging political energy, making it one of the most talked-about political events in Delhi’s corridors of power.

Observers note that this contest will likely influence political equations beyond the CCI, especially within BJP’s internal dynamics. While Rudy’s victory is seen as a win for cross-party coalition building, Balyan’s strong debut indicates that regional strength and grassroots connections remain powerful tools in Indian politics.

The episode also highlighted the changing nature of institutional elections in India, where social clubs with historical significance have become miniature battlegrounds reflecting national political trends. With its mix of personal rivalries, factionalism, and strategic alliances, the 2025 CCI polls will be remembered as much for its political drama as for its outcome.
