On April 28, 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh provided a briefing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the ongoing security measures following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. This terrorist attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, including a Nepalese national, marks one of the deadliest assaults in the region since the 2019 Pulwama attack.
The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s residence, included National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, who was also present to discuss security updates. This high-level review session was crucial, particularly after the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan, had briefed Singh on military strategies for countering Pakistan’s potential involvement in the attack.
The attack, carried out near the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, occurred around 2 PM, when tourists were gunned down. The brutal assault has drawn national and international attention. In response to the tragedy, the government has promised a decisive yet measured action to combat the threats posed by terrorist organisations.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), which convened an emergency meeting on April 23 under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, strongly condemned the attack. The committee pointed to the potential cross-border linkages and noted that the attack came amid political stability and positive development in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a serious attempt to destabilize the region.
To address these threats, significant measures have been taken. The Indian Army has launched extensive operations, including search and neutralization efforts, to apprehend those responsible for the killings. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has set up teams in Pahalgam to collect evidence and conduct investigations aimed at uncovering the masterminds behind the attack.
Furthermore, in a bid to counter misinformation and ensure national security, India has moved to ban 16 Pakistani YouTube channels. These channels were found to be spreading provocative and misleading content, targeting India’s security agencies. With over 63 million subscribers, these channels have a wide reach and have been accused of instigating unrest through digital platforms.
A significant development in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack is the scheduled meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence, which will convene today, April 28, at 3 PM at the Parliament House Annexe. The meeting is expected to focus on reviewing the government's preparedness and response to the ongoing security challenges, especially in light of the recent terrorist activities.
In conclusion, while the security forces continue to be on high alert, the government is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack are brought to justice. The ongoing review of military strategies and security measures underscores the government’s resolve to address terrorist threats decisively while maintaining regional peace and stability. The coming days will see further steps taken as the situation evolves.
