  • Rajnath Singh says people of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir are part of India’s family and will voluntarily return to the mainstream.

  • India’s defence production and exports have grown significantly, driven by Make in India and involving private sector participation.

  • Future talks with Pakistan will focus on terrorism and PoJK, with India adopting a strong strategy against terrorism.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the Confederation of Indian Industry Annual General Meeting and Business Summit 2025 in New Delhi on May 29, 2025. Speaking on the sensitive issue of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), he expressed confidence that the people of PoJK, though currently separated geographically and politically, are part of the Indian family and would eventually return voluntarily to the mainstream of India.

Mr. Singh emphasised the deep cultural and emotional connection that most people in PoJK feel towards India, noting that only a small number have been misled. He reiterated India’s commitment to the vision of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, which aims for unity in diversity and integration across regions.

The Defence Minister said the integration of PoK with India depends largely on India’s own cultural, social, and economic prosperity. He stated that India has always chosen the path of love, unity, and truth in its approach towards this issue.

Focus on Terrorism and Strategic Dialogue

Rajnath Singh highlighted India’s changed approach towards terrorism and its dealings with Pakistan. He said future talks with Pakistan would focus solely on issues of terrorism and PoJK. According to him, Pakistan has realised that terrorism is not cost-effective and will bear a heavy price for such actions.

He referred to the success of Operation Sindoor as a demonstration of India’s capability to take decisive action against terrorism even from remote locations, emphasizing India’s enhanced defence readiness.

Make in India and Defence Self-Reliance

The Defence Minister proudly spoke about India’s growth as a producer and exporter of defence equipment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The Make in India initiative has elevated the status of indigenous manufacturing to a level similar to the erstwhile premium attached to Made in Japan products.

India is not only manufacturing fighter jets and missile systems but is also advancing towards new-age warfare technology. The recently approved Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project aims to build fifth-generation fighter jets with five prototypes planned before series production. For the first time, private sector companies will participate alongside public sector enterprises in this major project.

India’s defence production has increased from ₹43,746 crore about a decade ago to over ₹1.46 lakh crore today, with the private sector contributing over ₹32,000 crore. Defence exports have surged from less than ₹1,000 crore to ₹23,500 crore, reaching more than 100 countries worldwide.

Role of MSMEs and Economic Resilience

Over 16,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) connected to the defence sector have become the backbone of India’s supply chain. These enterprises play a crucial role in achieving self-reliance, generating lakhs of jobs, and supporting economic resilience.

Mr. Singh said the Modi government has prioritised policy clarity, indigenisation, economic resilience, and strategic autonomy as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. This approach involves collaboration with entrepreneurs, innovators, and manufacturers under the motto India First.

India’s Economic Growth Amid Global Challenges

Despite global instability and economic slowdowns, India remains the fastest-growing major economy in the world. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has risen to become the fourth largest economy globally.

Rajnath Singh’s remarks at the CII Business Summit 2025 underline the government’s focus on national security, economic self-reliance, and the vision of a united India that will eventually bring back its separated brethren from PoJK into the mainstream fold
