In the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech, Ram Madhav, former National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has dismissed any reports of friction between the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Speaking to ANI, Madhav reiterated that the two organisations remain united under a shared ideological framework while performing complementary roles for the nation.

During his speech on India’s 79th Independence Day, PM Modi recognized the 100-year history of the RSS, which has sparked debate among political circles. Some opposition leaders, including those from the Congress Party, criticised the mention of the Sangh, claiming it undermines constitutional values and the tricolour. In response, Ram Madhav clarified that these speculations of tension, often termed “atkale”, are baseless and arise periodically in political discourse.

According to Madhav, the BJP and RSS function in different but complementary spheres. The BJP handles political activities and governance, while the RSS engages in social service and nation-building work outside politics. He emphasized that despite political opponents suggesting otherwise, there has never been any ideological or operational friction between the two organisations.

“These atkale are always put from time to time. If they don’t find any issue then RSS is brought forward and said that there is friction between RSS and BJP. RSS and BJP are two organisations joined together under the same ideological umbrella,” Madhav stated in New Delhi. He further highlighted that the BJP and RSS maintain constant contact to ensure their activities remain aligned with shared values and goals.

The remarks come amid opposition criticism of PM Modi’s Independence Day address, where Congress and allied parties labelled the reference to the RSS as an insult to the Constitution and national symbols. Despite such criticism, Madhav’s statements reaffirm that the ideological unity between the BJP and RSS is robust, with each organisation contributing to the country’s development in its respective capacity.

Political analysts note that the BJP-RSS relationship has often been a subject of speculation in public discourse, particularly during election seasons or major political events. Madhav’s remarks seek to clarify that any such suggestions of tension are misguided, and that the two entities continue to work together for social, cultural, and national development objectives.

He reiterated, “BJP works with a political angle, and RSS works outside politics, does multiple types of service for the development of the country. We are of the same ideological family, so we keep in touch, and in that there have never been any tensions. There is no tension.” These words reinforce the notion that political opposition narratives around friction are often exaggerated or misrepresented.
