Acharya Mahant Satyendra Das, the revered chief priest of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 85. His death followed a prolonged battle with serious health issues, including diabetes and high blood pressure, and after suffering a stroke. He had been receiving medical treatment at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow, where he was admitted after his condition worsened.

Initially, Mahant Satyendra Das was admitted to a private hospital in Ayodhya, but later transferred to SGPGI for more advanced care. During his hospitalization, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited him on Tuesday evening, expressing his concern over the priest’s condition. Despite efforts to treat his declining health, the revered priest passed away, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual service.

A Leader of the Ram Janmabhoomi Movement

Mahant Satyendra Das had been an instrumental figure in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, taking up the mantle of chief priest of the Ram temple in Ayodhya just months before the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992. His leadership during this pivotal period in Indian history garnered him respect not only in the religious community but also among political figures.

Having been associated with the Nirvani Akhara, Mahant Das dedicated his life to spiritual service from a young age, taking on the role of priest in Ayodhya at just 20 years old. “The demise of Acharya Shri Satyendra Kumar Das Ji Maharaj, the supreme devotee of Lord Ram and the chief priest of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, Shri Ayodhya Dham, is extremely sad and an irreparable loss to the spiritual world. Humble tribute!”

He continued, “We pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant a place to the departed soul at his feet and give strength to the grief-stricken disciples and followers to bear this immense loss.”
