A heated exchange unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravi Shankar Prasad sharply criticised Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi during the debate on a resolution seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Prasad accused the Opposition of misusing parliamentary procedures and claimed that the no-confidence motion against the Speaker was motivated by personal political interests rather than genuine concerns about parliamentary functioning.

Responding to Gandhi’s allegations that the Prime Minister had made compromises on certain issues, Prasad dismissed the claim.

He emphasised that “the Prime Minister of India can never be compromised.”

The BJP leader said that such accusations were baseless and undermined the dignity of the office of the Prime Minister.

He also cautioned opposition leaders against making statements that could weaken public trust in democratic institutions.

The exchange took place during a debate on a resolution seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Despite such incidents, Prasad argued that previous parliaments had not witnessed the kind of political confrontation currently being seen.

He suggested that the present debate reflected increasing politicisation of parliamentary procedures.
