The third edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 began in electrifying fashion, as the Gujarat Giants (GG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) took part in a thrilling season opener at the Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara, on February 14, 2025. The Gujarat Giants won the toss but were put in to bat first, setting the stage for a high-scoring affair. Opening the innings, Beth Mooney provided a solid start with a brilliant 56 runs off 42 deliveries, ensuring that the Giants had a competitive total. Following her, Ashleigh Gardner, the newly appointed skipper of Gujarat Giants, displayed exceptional form, finishing with an unbeaten 79 off just 37 balls*. With contributions from the middle order, the Giants managed to post a commanding total of 201 runs in their 20 overs.

In response, Royal Challengers Bangalore faced an early setback, as their openers were dismissed quickly, putting their chase in jeopardy. However, the middle-order resilience of Ellyse Perry, who scored 57 runs off 34 balls, and Richa Ghosh, who played a match-winning innings of 64 off just 27 balls*, propelled RCB to complete their chase with ease. This remarkable partnership not only helped RCB chase down the target but also set a new record for the highest run chase in WPL history, achieving their target and registering a thrilling win.

The match saw 403 runs scored in total, breaking the previous record for the highest aggregate total in WPL history, which stood at 391 runs from a clash between Gujarat Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2023. The 2025 opener now holds the top spot for the highest aggregate total in the tournament's history, making it a match for the record books. The third spot in the WPL aggregate totals is occupied by another exciting encounter between RCB and DC, which saw a total of 386 runs in the inaugural season.
