With Republic Day 2026 approaching, security agencies across India have issued a high-level alert, warning of possible drone, paraglider, and hang glider threats along sensitive border regions. Intelligence inputs indicate that terrorist groups could attempt infiltration and smuggling of weapons and explosives using aerial routes, particularly targeting the Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Rajasthan borders, where suspicious activities have been noted in the past.

Officials have highlighted that groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and certain Sikh extremist organisations may be attempting to procure paragliding equipment and related devices for potential attacks. Security agencies have therefore been instructed to remain on maximum alert, with heightened vigilance, continuous aerial surveillance, and strict ground-level monitoring to ensure that no suspicious movement goes undetected.

The alert underscores the seriousness of the threat as the nation prepares for the Republic Day parade, a high-profile event that draws significant public attention and requires stringent safety measures. Security personnel along the borders have been briefed to track unusual aerial activity, deploy rapid response teams, and implement preventive measures to thwart potential attempts of infiltration.

In New Delhi, the police have also announced the deployment of AI-enabled smart glasses for the first time in Republic Day security operations. These wearable devices come integrated with facial recognition systems (FRS) and thermal imaging technology. Manufactured by an Indian company, the smart glasses are connected in real-time to the police database, which contains records of criminals, proclaimed offenders, and suspects.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla, the smart glasses link directly to officers’ mobile phones, giving them instant access to the criminal database. Individuals identified in a green box indicate no criminal involvement, while those appearing in red boxes signal a criminal record, allowing officers to take immediate action if necessary. This innovative deployment aims to enhance real-time surveillance and ensure that security arrangements remain tight during large gatherings and parade events.

The Republic Day alert forms part of a broader nationwide initiative to strengthen border and urban security, combining advanced technology with traditional measures such as patrolling, checkpoint verification, and aerial monitoring.
