Key Points:

  1. Bengaluru Airport introduces India's first biometric-enabled self-bag drop for DigiYatra passengers.
  2. Passengers can use facial recognition instead of printed documents for seamless check-in and baggage drop.
  3. The system aims to reduce queues and improve passenger experience at Terminal 2 of Kempegowda International Airport.

Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) has once again set a benchmark in airport technology with the introduction of India's inaugural biometric-enabled self-bag drop facility at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). This innovative service is specifically tailored for DigiYatra domestic passengers traveling with Tata Group Airlines from Terminal 2.

The biometric self-bag drop system leverages advanced facial recognition technology to streamline the check-in and baggage drop processes. Traditionally, passengers were required to present a printed boarding pass and ID to use the self-bag drop facility. However, with this new system, passengers can initiate the process by selecting the 'scan your face biometric for baggage drop' option and choosing the 'DigiYatra' icon on the self-service kiosk.

Upon selection, passengers are prompted to look into the camera for biometric image capture. The system then retrieves flight details and requests confirmation of dangerous goods declaration. Once cleared, passengers proceed to place their bags on the conveyor belt, attach a baggage tag, and scan, weigh, and feed their bags into the baggage management system. A baggage receipt is generated upon completion of the process.

In cases where excess baggage fees apply, passengers are directed to a counter for payment, with plans underway to integrate UPI payment options for real-time transactions. For those who prefer traditional methods, the self-bag drop process can still be initiated by scanning their boarding pass.

Bengaluru Airport has been at the forefront of technological advancements in the aviation sector. In 2018, it introduced a fully automated self-bag drop system and subsequently piloted the DigiYatra initiative in 2019. These initiatives are aimed at optimizing passenger flow, reducing wait times, and enhancing overall travel experience.

The introduction of biometric-enabled self-bag drop not only underscores Bengaluru Airport's commitment to innovation but also aligns with global trends towards enhancing airport efficiency and passenger convenience. By eliminating the need for physical documents during check-in and baggage drop, the airport not only reduces paper usage but also enhances operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction.

With plans to expand such technological innovations across other terminals and airlines in the future, Bengaluru Airport continues to set new standards in airport management and customer service. The biometric self-bag drop facility not only transforms the passenger journey but also sets a precedent for other airports in India and around the world to adopt similar advancements in the years to come.
