  • Robert Vadra appears before the ED for second day in connection with the controversial Gurugram land deal linked to Skylight Hospitality.

  • Vadra says he is being targeted for political reasons, highlighting he has already submitted 23,000 documents and faced hours of earlier questioning.

  • The 2008 land deal saw land bought at ₹7.5 crore and sold to DLF for ₹58 crore, triggering scrutiny under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Businessman Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for the second consecutive day on April 16, 2025, as part of an ongoing investigation into a land deal case in Haryana. This questioning is connected to a controversial 2008 transaction involving land acquisition in Gurugram, particularly the Manesar-Shikohpur region (now Sector 83). Vadra, who was a director at Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd, the company involved in the deal, was questioned under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Vadra's Defiant Remarks Ahead of Questioning

Before heading into the ED office for his interrogation, Vadra spoke to news agency ANI and made it clear that he had no fear of the ongoing investigation, stating, "Hum kisi se darte nahi hain" (We do not fear anybody). Vadra also expressed his frustration with the repetitive nature of the questions posed by the agency, emphasizing that he had already answered similar queries multiple times in previous investigations.

"I was surprised to see the second summons from the agency as I have already appeared 15 times before regarding the same case," Vadra said. He added that he had already provided 23,000 documents and had undergone extensive questioning, even offering statements from 2019 that had already been submitted. "The agencies are being misused," Vadra concluded, hinting at a political motive behind the persistent questioning.

The Land Deal: What’s the Case Against Vadra?

The investigation against Vadra is focused on a land transaction in 2008 when Skylight Hospitality, a company previously linked to him, purchased 3.5 acres of land in the Shikohpur village of Gurugram for Rs 7.5 crore. This land acquisition took place during the tenure of Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the Congress-led Haryana government.

The controversy erupted when, in 2012, Skylight Hospitality sold the same piece of land to DLF, a major real estate company, for a significantly higher price of Rs 58 crore. The deal caught the attention of IAS officer Ashok Khemka, who was serving as the Director General of Land Consolidation and Land Records at the time. In October 2012, Khemka cancelled the mutation of the land transaction, declaring it violative of the State Consolidation Act and other related land procedures. This led to an official probe into the legality of the deal.

The Ongoing Investigation

The ED's investigation, which has been underway for several years, revolves around allegations of money laundering connected to this high-value land deal. Vadra, a prominent businessman and the brother-in-law of Rahul Gandhi, has often been accused by critics of using political influence for financial gain, though he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Despite his assertions of transparency, the repeated summons by the ED indicate that the agency is determined to delve deeper into the financial transactions involved, particularly regarding the significant price hike between the land’s purchase and its resale.

The Political Dimension

The investigation has also taken on a political dimension, with Vadra’s close ties to the Congress party and his familial connections to Rahul Gandhi becoming a focal point of public debate. Critics of the BJP government have accused the ED of using the probe as a political tool to target prominent opposition figures. Vadra, in his comments, also hinted at a political motive behind his questioning, claiming that his family’s relevance in politics made them targets of ongoing investigations.

Vadra’s questioning comes amid a period of heightened political activity, with both the Congress and BJP engaged in fierce competition, especially in the context of upcoming elections. The Congress party has come out in defense of Vadra, accusing the government of misusing investigative agencies to settle political scores.

Previous Appearances and Legal Matters

Vadra’s appearance before the Enforcement Directorate is not his first. He had previously been summoned multiple times by the agency, including a marathon 10-hour questioning session, where he provided a significant amount of documentary evidence to support his statements. Despite his compliance with previous investigations, the repeated summons have drawn attention, with Vadra expressing dissatisfaction over what he perceives as redundant questioning.

In his defense, Vadra has consistently maintained that there is no illicit activity involved in the land deal and has accused the agency of harassing him without solid evidence.

Conclusion: Will the Investigation Lead to Legal Action?

The outcome of the investigation is still uncertain, with no charges filed against Vadra as of yet. The ED’s ongoing probe into the 2008 land deal could eventually lead to formal charges of money laundering if the agency uncovers sufficient evidence of financial wrongdoing. However, given the political stakes involved and the high-profile nature of the case, the matter is likely to continue to attract significant public and media attention.

As the investigation continues, Robert Vadra’s legal team will likely mount a defense, challenging the basis of the investigation and the repeated summons from the Enforcement Directorate. The case remains a key flashpoint in the ongoing political dynamics between the Congress and BJP, with both parties using the case as a point of attack and counterattack. For now, Vadra’s assertion remains clear: "We do not fear anybody."
