- Section 174(a) of the Railways Act – Obstructing a train’s movement, punishable by two years in jail or a fine of ₹2,000 or both.
What the Law Says About Damaging Railway Property
The Railways Act, 1989 strictly prohibits any act that endangers the safety of passengers or railway operations. The penalties for railway vandalism include:
- Section 153 – Anyone who endangers the safety of passengers by obstructing railway rolling stock can face up to five years in prison.
- Section 174(a) – Any obstruction of a train or its operations is punishable by up to two years in prison, a fine of ₹2,000, or both.
RPF Enhances Security Measures to Prevent Future Incidents
The RPF and the State Government have coordinated efforts with Government Railway Police (GRP) to enhance security at railway stations and in trains. Additional security personnel have been deployed at vulnerable stations to prevent further acts of vandalism.
