In a symbolic gesture of unity and tradition, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat took part in a grand mass wedding in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. The event, held near the scenic Shankuldhara pond, saw the union of 125 couples who tied the knot in a celebration that spanned multiple communities.
One of the most poignant moments of the ceremony was when Bhagwat performed the traditional 'kanyadaan' for a tribal bride, Rajwanti, from Jogidih village in Sonbhadra district. As the ceremony progressed, Bhagwat washed the feet of the bride, taking on the role of a father figure. The RSS chief gave his heartfelt blessings to Rajwanti, who was married to Aman, a tribal youth from Renukoot.
The emotional moment was underscored by the chanting of Vedic mantras, as Bhagwat not only performed the kanyadaan but also gave Rajwanti a symbolic wedding gift of Rs 501. In an endearing gesture, he told Aman, "Take good care of my daughter and keep her happy always." His words and actions brought a deep sense of reverence to the occasion, highlighting the cultural and societal values embedded in the union.
The mass wedding was designed to promote social harmony, bringing together brides and grooms from a variety of castes, including upper castes, Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and Scheduled Castes (SCs). By providing a platform for people from diverse backgrounds to marry together in a single ceremony, the event showcased inclusivity and the strength of shared cultural values.
The wedding procession of the 125 couples began at the Dwarkadhish Temple and continued towards Khojwa, with the grooms riding horses and carriages, accompanied by brass bands. As the parade proceeded, locals warmly showered flowers and offered refreshments, contributing to the communal spirit of the occasion.
During his address to the gathering, Bhagwat emphasized that marriage is not merely the union of two individuals but an important foundation for a stronger society. "A wedding is not just the union of two individuals but the beginning of a bond between two families — and ultimately, a stronger society," Bhagwat remarked.
He further encouraged the elders who participated in the kanyadaan ritual to remain involved in the lives of the newlyweds, offering guidance and support. "Stay in touch with the newlyweds and visit them at least once or twice a year to guide them," he advised. The RSS chief also highlighted the significance of family as a social unit, stating that it should never be confined to just a husband, wife, and children, but rather seen as an integral part of the larger society, bound by shared values, culture, and mutual care.
In addition to Bhagwat, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also participated in the ceremony, offering his blessings to the couples and further strengthening the symbol of unity and collective celebration. The mass wedding not only marked an emotional occasion but also demonstrated the RSS's commitment to cultural inclusiveness and fostering harmony among diverse communities.
