On Thursday, November 8, 2024, a New York federal judge took a hard stance against Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor and personal attorney to President-elect Donald Trump, after he failed to surrender personal property to settle part of a $146 million defamation verdict. The case involves two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Moss, who sued Giuliani after he falsely accused them of committing election fraud during the 2020 presidential election.
Judge Lewis Liman of U.S. District Court in Manhattan threatened to hold Giuliani in contempt of court if he does not turn over personal property, which includes luxury watches, baseball memorabilia, and a 1980 Mercedes-Benz. These items are part of the forfeiture ordered in the defamation case, where Giuliani was found liable for making false claims about the two women.
During the hearing, Giuliani’s lawyer, Kenneth Caruso, suggested that Giuliani was unaware of the locations of some of his assets. Judge Liman dismissed this as "farcical," stating that all the property must be surrendered, and if it is not, Giuliani will face contempt charges. Liman also warned Caruso that failure to comply by Monday would result in further legal action.
Freeman and Moss’s attorney, Aaron Nathan, told the court that Giuliani had removed most of his items from his Manhattan apartment, which is also subject to forfeiture. Nathan accused Giuliani of stonewalling efforts to locate the missing property, claiming that the former mayor had been "game playing" and refusing to disclose where the items had been moved.
Giuliani, on the other hand, stated that the property is spread out across his homes in New York and Palm Beach, Florida, and at a storage facility in Ronkonkoma, Long Island, which he claims he cannot access. Nathan also raised concerns about Giuliani allegedly opening secret bank accounts and creating limited liability companies in an attempt to hide his assets following the verdict.
Giuliani’s legal woes stem from his role in promoting unfounded claims of election fraud after the 2020 election, particularly regarding the actions of Freeman and Moss at a vote-counting site. As part of the defamation case, Giuliani was ordered to pay $146 million in damages.
In a somewhat defiant tone outside the court, Giuliani expressed his belief that the verdict would be overturned on appeal, and he would eventually regain his personal property. When asked about his communication with Trump since his election victory, Giuliani confirmed that Trump had reached out, but he declined to reveal what was discussed.
Giuliani's ongoing legal battles and his failure to comply with the court’s orders continue to add to the controversy surrounding his post-presidency actions, highlighting the challenges he faces in satisfying the defamation judgment.
