  • Russia launched 550 missiles and drones overnight targeting Ukraine; Ukrainian defences shot down 270, with 23 people injured in Kyiv.

  • The assault damaged multiple Kyiv districts; debris fell at 33 sites, and fires broke out in residential and industrial areas.

  • Attack followed Trump's call with Putin and U.S. decision to pause some weapons shipments to Ukraine, including Patriots and Stingers.

KYIV, UKRAINE – July 5, 2025:
Russia launched an enormous aerial assault on Ukraine overnight, firing 550 missiles and Shahed drones in what Ukrainian officials described as one of the largest attacks of the war. The Ukrainian capital Kyiv bore the brunt of the bombardment, with at least 23 people injured and 14 hospitalised, Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed.

Ukrainian air defences reported intercepting 270 aerial targets, including two cruise missiles. However, 208 other targets vanished from radar, with officials saying they were likely jammed or lost due to electronic countermeasures.

Throughout the night, Kyiv residents endured the buzz of drones, explosions, and machine-gun fire as air defence crews worked to repel the wave of incoming weapons. Debris from destroyed drones and missiles fell across at least 33 locations, sparking fires and causing damage in five of the city's ten districts.

In Solomianskyi district, a five-story residential building was partially destroyed, while the roof of a seven-story building caught fire. Fires also broke out at a warehouse, garage complex, and auto repair facility, according to emergency services.

Russia said its forces successfully struck eight locations using nine missiles and 63 drones.

The attack came just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump also made his first public remarks about his administration's decision to pause certain U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine.

The paused shipments include Patriot missiles, AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missiles, and shorter-range Stinger missiles—all critical for countering Russia's missile and drone onslaught and defending Ukrainian airspace.

It is less than a week since Russia conducted its previous massive aerial barrage, when Ukraine’s Air Force reported 537 drones and 60 missiles were used in another record-setting attack.

The latest bombardment underscores the relentless intensity of Russia’s air campaign, as well as Ukraine’s ongoing struggle to secure adequate air defence munitions amid shifting Western support. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly appealed for more advanced systems and consistent deliveries to counter Russia’s evolving tactics.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that any pause or reduction in military support from allies risks giving Moscow an opening to escalate attacks on civilian areas.

As the war grinds on, Kyiv residents are bracing for further strikes, while negotiations over Western aid packages remain entangled in both U.S. and European politics
