What's covered under the Article:

  • Russia’s drone attacks across Ukraine lead to at least four deaths, including airstrikes in Donetsk and Pavlohrad.

  • Donald Trump questions Putin’s intentions for peace, casting doubt on a potential deal to end the war.

  • Tensions rise as Russia claims control over Kursk region, with fighting still ongoing according to Ukrainian sources.

On Sunday, Russia launched a massive wave of drone strikes and airstrikes across Ukraine, resulting in at least four fatalities, including civilians, in the ongoing conflict. The attack targeted multiple regions, including the Donetsk region, where airstrikes on the city of Kostyantynivka claimed the lives of three people and left four others injured. A series of drone strikes also hit Pavlohrad in the Dnipropetrovsk region for the third consecutive night, with one fatality reported, alongside a 14-year-old girl who was wounded in the attack.

These attacks came shortly after Russia claimed to have regained full control over parts of the Kursk region, which Ukrainian forces had captured during a surprise offensive in August 2024. However, Ukrainian officials have denied that the region is fully under Russian control, confirming that fierce fighting in the area remains ongoing. This adds another layer of complexity to the already volatile situation in the region, with both sides continuing to engage in military operations.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has raised doubts regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s commitment to ending the war. On Saturday, Trump expressed skepticism about the possibility of a peace deal soon, given Putin’s recent actions, including missile attacks on civilian areas. Trump posted on social media, questioning the rationale behind Putin’s continued attacks, particularly as recent reports indicated the possibility of a peace deal. He also hinted at the potential for further sanctions against Russia.

Later on Sunday evening, Trump reiterated his frustration with Putin’s actions, stating that he wanted Russia to halt the attacks and engage in talks to negotiate a deal. Trump’s comments came after a brief encounter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Vatican, where the two leaders met following the funeral of Pope Francis. This meeting marked the first in-person conversation between Trump and Zelenskyy since their tense February 28 meeting at the White House.

Trump's doubts about Putin's intentions come at a critical time as the conflict continues to escalate. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, also emphasized the importance of the coming week, suggesting that it will be crucial for the US to decide whether to continue its involvement in the conflict. As both military actions and diplomatic tensions continue, the situation remains fluid, with no clear resolution in sight.

The mounting violence, coupled with Trump’s skepticism and continued international attention, underscores the complex nature of the ongoing war. As the world watches closely, the next steps for both Russia and Ukraine, as well as the involvement of global powers, will likely have significant implications for the future of the conflict.
