Ukrainian air force intercepted 40 of 85 drones launched, while Kharkiv emergency services battled fires in residential zones
In the latest escalation of violence in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Russian drone strikes on Kharkiv killed three people and left at least 60 others injured, including nine children, on Wednesday, 11 June 2025.
The drone attacks targeted residential neighbourhoods, triggering fires, damaging public infrastructure and causing widespread panic, even as both countries remain locked in stalled peace talks aimed at reaching a ceasefire.
Kharkiv Under Fire Again
The city of Kharkiv, located in northeastern Ukraine, has faced frequent bombardment in recent months. According to Mayor Ihor Terekhov, 17 attack drones struck two residential districts during the night, causing extensive destruction.
“Those are ordinary sites of peaceful life — those that should never be targeted,” the Mayor posted on Telegram.
Crews from Ukraine’s Emergency Service, along with volunteers and municipal workers, worked through the night to:
-
Extinguish fires in residential and public buildings
-
Rescue residents trapped under debris or in burning homes
-
Restore essential services such as gas, electricity, and water
Casualty Figures and Damage
Kharkiv regional head Oleh Syniehubov confirmed the human toll from the attacks:
-
3 civilians dead
-
At least 60 people injured, including
-
9 children, aged 2 to 15
-
Many of the injured are said to be in critical condition, and hospitals across Kharkiv are on emergency alert.
The worst-hit areas included the Slobidskyi and Osnovianskyi districts, where drone strikes ignited apartment fires, destroyed playgrounds, shattered public transport vehicles, and damaged industrial facilities.
Images shared by the Emergency Service on Telegram show:
-
Flames engulfing multi-storey buildings
-
Shattered windows and torn facades
-

Scale of the Attack
Ukraine’s air force confirmed that 85 drones — a mix of attack and decoy UAVs — were launched by Russian forces on Wednesday night.
-
40 drones were intercepted by air defence systems
-
9 drones failed to reach targets and caused no damage
-
The remaining drones inflicted direct hits on civilian zones
This marks the third large-scale aerial assault on Ukraine in just four days, with nearly 500 drones fired on Monday and 315 drones with 7 missiles on Tuesday.
Pattern of Civilian Targeting
Kharkiv has been a repeated target of Russian aerial aggression. The latest wave of drone strikes follows a well-established pattern of:
-
Nighttime attacks when civilians are asleep
-
Focus on residential neighbourhoods
-
Use of drones to evade radar detection
Despite Russia claiming its strikes are aimed at military targets, evidence repeatedly shows civilian infrastructure and non-combatants bearing the brunt.
In Kharkiv, over the past six months alone:
-
More than 400 civilians have been injured
-
Public schools, hospitals, and metro systems have suffered serious damage
-
Thousands of families have evacuated to western Ukraine or across borders
Kharkiv Residents Vow Resilience
Despite the destruction, the city’s Mayor Ihor Terekhov declared that Kharkiv would not be broken.
“We stand strong. We help one another. And we will endure,” he said.
“Kharkiv is Ukraine. And it cannot be broken.”
