Ryan Routh has pleaded not guilty to five federal charges, including attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

Prosecutors allege Routh intended to kill Trump while he was golfing at Trump International Golf Club.

The incident raises serious concerns about the security of presidential candidates ahead of the upcoming election.

In a significant legal development, Ryan Routh, a 58-year-old man, has pleaded not guilty to five federal charges, including the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. This plea was entered during a court hearing before US Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart on Monday. Routh, who appeared in court wearing a tan prison jumpsuit and was handcuffed, responded affirmatively when asked if he understood the charges against him. His defense attorney subsequently entered the not-guilty plea on his behalf.

Routh is accused of attempting to assassinate Trump by positioning himself with a rifle outside the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on September 15. Prosecutors allege that Routh intended to kill Trump while he was golfing, as evidenced by a self-published book in which Routh condemned the Republican presidential candidate. Additionally, Routh had previously left a letter with an associate referencing his intention to assassinate Trump, stating, “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you,” according to court filings.

During the incident, Routh was discovered hiding outside a fence that overlooked the sixth hole of the golf course. Law enforcement found an AK-47-style rifle, a bag of snacks, a digital camera, and metal plates meant to withstand gunfire. Notably, a Secret Service agent patrolling the area spotted Routh and opened fire upon seeing the rifle protruding from the fence. Routh fled the scene but was later apprehended along a Florida highway.

Initially, Routh faced gun-related charges, but an indictment last week expanded these to include attempted assassination, assault on a federal officer, and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime. This incident is not the first apparent assassination attempt on Trump, raising serious concerns about the security of presidential candidates.

Just two months prior, on July 13, a gunman wounded Trump and killed an attendee at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, before being shot dead by a Secret Service sniper. These repeated threats against Trump's life have prompted him to leverage the situation into a campaign issue, alleging that the Justice Department—which has charged him in two criminal cases—should not be trusted to handle the investigation into these assassination attempts.

As the November 5 election approaches, questions surrounding candidate security are becoming increasingly pressing. Routh’s case highlights the extreme measures some individuals may take regarding political figures, making it vital for authorities to reassess and enhance security protocols for presidential candidates.
