What’s Covered Under the Article:

  • Salman Khurshid, in Jakarta, asserts that India refuses to be equated with Pakistan, insisting on separate global recognition without hyphenation.

  • Khurshid clarifies that India did not initiate peace talks with Pakistan, stating that DGMO Pakistan contacted India first to halt Operation Sindoor.

  • The Congress leader underlines India’s unity across party lines, highlighting a seven-nation diplomatic outreach post-Pahalgam terror attack.

In a candid address to the Indian community in Jakarta, Indonesia, on May 30, 2025, former External Affairs Minister and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid conveyed a powerful message on India’s stance towards Pakistan and the ongoing tensions along the border. Khurshid asserted firmly that India refuses to be lumped alongside Pakistan — stressing that “we don’t want a hyphen between India and Pakistan.”

Khurshid elaborated that India is a nation with a much larger global role and stature. He stated, “We are not Pakistan; we are much larger than they are. We have a greater role in the world... We got respect not only for our strength but also for showing confidence in our strength.” He explained that India’s military actions under Operation Sindoor were calibrated to teach Pakistan a lesson, but India chose restraint, emphasizing that India is not “greedy for Pakistan, their territory, or to destroy them.”

No Hyphen Between India and Pakistan

A key theme of Khurshid’s remarks was the distinct identity India maintains, separate from Pakistan. “We don’t want a hyphen between India and Pakistan... Talk to us separately,” he declared, highlighting the pluralistic culture of India and the spirit of coexistence and celebration that defines the country. According to Khurshid, India’s patriotism is rooted in humanity and respect for the motherland.

Clarifying India’s Position on Ceasefire Violations

Khurshid firmly rejected claims that India initiated contact for a ceasefire during Operation Sindoor. He labeled such claims as “complete hogwash,” clarifying that it was Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) who called India’s DGMO to request cessation of hostilities. India complied immediately and refrained from further attacks after Pakistan’s request.

However, Khurshid pointed out that ceasefire violations continued on the Pakistani side for several hours after the ceasefire call. He highlighted the lack of control within Pakistan, noting the civilian government’s weakness and internal army factions competing for power, which contributed to the continued border shelling.

India’s Aspirations and Unified Political Front

Salman Khurshid emphasized that India is poised for greatness and warned that no external forces should distract India from its path. “India is waiting to be great. Nobody distract us or interfere with that passage of ours. That is why it is important for us to show our strength,” he stated.

He also praised the all-party delegation that visited Indonesia and other countries as a symbol of India’s united stand against terrorism. This delegation included members from ruling and opposition parties alike, reflecting a collective national commitment beyond partisan lines. Khurshid stressed that the delegation’s presence underlines the singular focus on India’s interests rather than individual party politics.

The Message to Pakistan: Give Up Terrorism

Khurshid’s address carried a clear demand to Pakistan to abandon terrorism. He said, “If there is any sense in Pakistan, they will understand our only demand: give up terrorism.” He acknowledged the participation of members from across political parties in delivering India’s message internationally, highlighting India’s zero tolerance for terrorism.

Background: Operation Sindoor and Diplomatic Outreach

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, 2025, in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people and was carried out by Pakistan-sponsored terrorist groups including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, neutralizing over 100 terrorists.

Since then, the Indian government has deployed seven multi-party delegations worldwide to inform global partners about Pakistan’s role in sponsoring terrorism and to explain India’s military and diplomatic responses. These delegations have visited countries including France, the UK, Germany, the EU, Italy, Denmark, Indonesia, and others, highlighting India’s commitment to combatting cross-border terrorism.

Conclusion

Salman Khurshid’s remarks in Indonesia encapsulate India’s firm position: India is distinct and separate from Pakistan and will not be seen as linked or diminished by association. India demands respect for its stature and aspires to global leadership while demonstrating measured strength. The internal turmoil within Pakistan and continued ceasefire violations reflect its instability, contrasting with India’s unified political front and diplomatic outreach. As India continues its fight against terrorism and strives for greatness, leaders like Khurshid reiterate the country’s unwavering commitment to peace, strength, and sovereignty.
