In a significant move to strengthen law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, authorities have begun constructing a new police outpost using the very bricks and stones hurled during last year’s violent clashes. The police outpost, located in Deepa Sarai, aims to bolster security in the region, which witnessed massive unrest on November 24, 2024, during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey of the Jama Masjid.

Bricks Once Used for Riots Now Used for Security

The violence in Sambhal’s Kot Garvi locality last year turned into a major law-and-order crisis when miscreants attacked security personnel with stones. The clashes escalated, resulting in gunfire, the deaths of four individuals, and injuries to several others. Now, those very bricks and stones that were used as weapons of destruction are being repurposed to build police outposts in the district, including at Deepa Sarai and Hindu Purakheda.

Authorities in Sambhal have undertaken the construction of 38 police posts and outposts, a move seen as a direct response to the riots and a step toward ensuring lasting peace in the region. The symbolism of using the same materials from the violence to build law enforcement infrastructure has sparked discussions on social media, with many calling it a powerful message of resilience and law enforcement reform.

Little Girl Lays the First Brick: A Symbol of Trust and Security

Adding a special touch to the foundation-laying ceremony, a young girl named Inaya was chosen to place the first brick for the Deepa Sarai police outpost. ASP Shreesh Chandra emphasized the importance of this gesture, stating,

“We wanted to send a strong message about the safety and protection of women and children. Choosing a girl to lay the first brick symbolizes security and trust in law enforcement.”

Expressing her excitement, Inaya shared her experience, saying,

“I live in Nakhasa, and I got to place the first brick for the new police outpost. It felt really nice because so many people were there. I also received Rs 50 as a token of appreciation.”

This move is being hailed as a step toward community engagement and confidence-building, particularly in regions that have witnessed communal tensions.

Sambhal Mosque Dispute: Court Hearing on April 28

The construction of the police outpost comes amid ongoing legal battles over the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal. A district court has scheduled a hearing for April 28 regarding claims that the mosque was originally a Harihar Temple.

The case has been a highly debated issue in the region, and legal proceedings have been ongoing since November 19, 2023, when the petition was initially filed. The Hindu side’s lawyer alleged that the respondent failed to submit a written statement, leading to the court deferring the hearing to April 28.

Strengthening Law and Order in Violence-Hit Sambhal

Sambhal has been a focal point of communal tensions, and the government’s response includes a major push to strengthen law enforcement infrastructure. With 38 police outposts being constructed in the district, authorities hope to prevent further violence and ensure swift police response to any future disturbances.

The police outposts are being built with modern facilities, including a three-story structure, a dedicated control room, and improved surveillance capabilities. Officials believe that these measures will help restore confidence among residents and deter anti-social elements from attempting to disrupt law and order again.

Reactions to the Initiative

The move to use stones from last year’s riots for police construction has received mixed reactions from the public and political figures. While some see it as a poetic justice, emphasizing that violence will now serve law enforcement, others have questioned whether repurposing the materials sends the right message.

Notably, the Deepa Sarai police outpost is located close to the residence of Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur-Rahman Barq, which has fueled political discussions regarding law enforcement expansion in the area. However, officials maintain that the decision to strengthen police infrastructure is purely administrative and aimed at ensuring public safety.
