Sanjay Singh, the Rajya Sabha MP from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), on Thursday sent legal notices to BJP leaders Amit Malviya and Manoj Tiwari over the allegations that he possesses multiple voter ID cards. The controversy came to light when Virendra Sachdeva, the Delhi BJP State President, accused Singh of having his name listed in multiple voter lists, including those in Hari Nagar, Sultanpur, New Delhi, and Tilak Nagar. This issue has sparked a wave of allegations and counter-allegations between the AAP and BJP, with the 2024 Delhi Assembly elections approaching.
Sanjay Singh, responding to the accusations, made a public statement clarifying the situation. He explained that his wife, Anita Singh, had filed an application with the District Electoral Office in Sultanpur to have her name removed from the voter list there, effective January 4, 2024. Singh also emphasized that his name was not included in the voter list of Sultanpur, and only his parents' names appeared in the list. His clarification came after the BJP leaders’ accusations regarding discrepancies in his voter registration.
Virendra Sachdeva, during a press conference, claimed that when Sanjay Singh entered the Rajya Sabha in 2018, he had mentioned that his vote was registered in Hari Nagar. However, Sachdeva pointed out that Singh’s name appeared in several other voter lists, raising suspicions about the authenticity of his voter ID details. He further alleged that Anita Singh, Sanjay Singh’s wife, had made contradictory statements, claiming that her vote was cut from Sultanpur but still remained on the voter list.
As tensions escalate ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP has intensified its attacks on the AAP leadership, particularly targeting Arvind Kejriwal. Sachdeva criticized Kejriwal for avoiding discussions on key Delhi issues, including the deteriorating condition of roads, dirty water, and electricity problems in the city. He also accused Kejriwal of avoiding responsibility for alleged scams within the AAP. According to Sachdeva, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for three new colleges in Delhi, as well as dedicate Rs 4,500 crores in projects aimed at improving the lives of Delhi residents.
The increasing tensions between the AAP and BJP highlight the growing political rivalry in Delhi as both parties prepare for the upcoming elections. With less than two months remaining until the elections, the voter ID controversy and the shifting political landscape are likely to remain at the forefront of the ongoing political battle. Both parties continue to focus on key issues that could sway voter sentiment, while accusations of mismanagement and political opportunism continue to fuel the debate.
