  • SAP unveiled AI-driven role-based assistants in Joule to partner with humans and enhance productivity in specific business roles.

  • New innovations include SAP Business Data Cloud for secure data access, AI-native supply chain orchestration, and Engagement Cloud for personalised stakeholder interactions.

  • SAP’s next-generation Ariba suite integrates AI for smarter procurement, highlighting the convergence of AI, data, and applications in ERP systems.

At its inaugural SAP Connect event on October 6, SAP unveiled a range of AI-driven innovations designed to transform enterprise resource planning (ERP) and business operations. Central to these announcements was the introduction of role-based AI assistants within Joule, SAP’s AI copilot aimed at enhancing productivity and internal collaboration across organizations.

The newly introduced role-based assistants are designed to partner with human users in specific business roles, orchestrating workflows and unlocking insights that were previously difficult to achieve. For example, a People Manager Assistant can coordinate multiple specialized agents to identify and resolve complex issues such as compensation anomalies, ensuring efficient resolution without requiring manual oversight. Each assistant is built to tap into the right agents for specific tasks, enabling employees to focus on strategic decision-making while the AI handles operational execution.

Muhammad Alam, member of the executive board of SAP SE for Product & Engineering, emphasized during his keynote that these innovations demonstrate the power of SAP Business Suite, where AI, data, and applications converge to drive faster execution, smarter decisions, and scalable digital transformation. Alam drew a parallel with the evolution of the mobile phone, noting that disparate technologies are now seamlessly integrated into single devices, just as business applications are increasingly unified in modern ERP systems.

A key challenge for AI adoption in enterprise environments has been siloed data, which limits AI’s transformative potential. To address this, SAP introduced Business Data Cloud (BDC) Connect, a solution that securely links SAP systems with partner platforms, enabling bidirectional access to business-ready data products without copying data. Thomas Pfiester, head of SAP’s Global Customer Engagement and Services, explained that BDC Connect mitigates security concerns by allowing data to remain in SAP systems while still being accessible across other platforms like Databricks and Google Query, preserving business context and adhering to global data standards.

SAP also showcased several key product innovations designed to complement AI-driven workflows:

  • SAP Supply Chain Orchestration: This AI-native solution leverages a live knowledge graph to detect real-time risks among suppliers and orchestrate coordinated responses, helping organizations anticipate disruptions and maintain operational continuity.

  • SAP Engagement Cloud: Using business-critical context, this platform personalizes interactions across customers, suppliers, and stakeholders, enhancing engagement and collaboration at all levels.

  • Next-generation SAP Ariba: The AI-native procurement suite facilitates end-to-end spend management, from sourcing to supplier engagement, integrating AI to optimize procurement processes and improve efficiency.

Together, these innovations reflect SAP’s strategy to integrate AI seamlessly into ERP systems, enabling organizations to enhance decision-making, automate complex workflows, and respond proactively to business challenges. The combination of role-based AI assistants, secure data connectivity, and intelligent ERP tools represents a significant leap in SAP’s digital transformation offerings, providing enterprises with the capabilities to unlock new productivity levels and insights.

By embedding AI in core business processes, SAP aims to ensure that employees can focus on strategic, high-value tasks, while AI handles repetitive and complex operational work. This approach aligns with global trends in enterprise automation, where AI-driven platforms are increasingly viewed as essential for maintaining competitive advantage.

In conclusion, SAP’s announcements at SAP Connect demonstrate a holistic approach to modernizing ERP systems through AI, secure data access, and intelligent workflow orchestration. With Joule assistants, BDC Connect, Supply Chain Orchestration, Engagement Cloud, and Ariba’s AI-native suite, SAP is positioning itself at the forefront of AI-driven enterprise solutions, empowering organizations to make smarter decisions, enhance productivity, and transform operations at scale.
