India's top-ranked men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty continued their stellar run at the India Open 2025 Super 750, securing a spot in the semi-finals on Friday. The duo, seeded 7th, defeated South Korea’s Jin Yong and Kang Min Hyuk in straight sets, 21-10, 21-17. This victory marks their third consecutive semi-final appearance in the ongoing BWF Tour.

Satwik and Chirag, the 2022 champions of the tournament, will next face the third-seeded pair of Sze Fei Goh and Nur Izzuddin from Malaysia in the semi-finals scheduled for January 18. Reflecting on their win, Satwiksairaj mentioned, “We were pretty comfortable even though it was close. There were no tensions, and we stayed positive throughout the match.”

PV Sindhu and Kiran George’s Early Exit

In contrast to the men’s doubles success, India’s challenge in singles at the India Open 2025 ended with disappointing results for PV Sindhu and Kiran George.

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu was knocked out in the women’s singles quarter-finals after a tough battle with Gregoria Mariska of Indonesia, the 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medalist. Sindhu lost 9-21, 21-19, 17-21. While she made a strong comeback in the second set, the opening set proved to be a disaster for Sindhu, as Mariska dominated with a 21-9 win. Sindhu admitted, “It is sad that I lost in the third set after fighting so hard, but I think the game is such. I have to obviously come back stronger."

Kiran George, India’s last remaining hope in men’s singles, also suffered a disappointing exit. He went down to Yang Weng of China in the quarter-finals with a 13-21, 19-21 loss. Despite a valiant effort, Kiran was unable to match the intensity of his opponent and was eliminated from the tournament. Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen and Lakshya Sen both suffered early exits, marking a tough day for India’s singles players.

Looking Ahead

With Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty leading the charge in men’s doubles, India still has a chance to celebrate success at the India Open 2025. However, the early exits of top singles players, including PV Sindhu and Kiran George, highlight the challenges faced by India in this year’s edition of the prestigious tournament.

As the semi-finals approach, all eyes will be on the Indian men's doubles pair to continue their momentum and potentially clinch the title once again.
