  • Former world No. 1 doubles pair Satwik and Chirag aim to reclaim Indonesia Open title after strong Singapore Open semifinal finish.

  • Two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu targets deep run in Indonesia after hamstring injury and recent early exits.

  • Indian singles players H.S. Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, and Kiran George face tough draws, while doubles and mixed doubles pairs also compete.

The $1,450,000 Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament begins on June 3, 2025, in Jakarta with Indian shuttlers gearing up to make a mark on one of the sport’s biggest stages. Leading the charge are former world No. 1 men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, whose inspiring comeback story continues after a promising semifinal finish at the Singapore Open last week.

Satwik-Chirag Aim to Reclaim Glory

Satwik and Chirag, who had to overcome fitness challenges including Satwik’s health issues and Chirag’s lingering back injury, showed their trademark tactical brilliance in Singapore by defeating the world No.1 Malaysian duo. Currently ranked 27th, they will look to climb back into the top 20 by performing strongly at the Istora Senayan arena — a venue that suits their aggressive style.

Their opening match is against Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana, and a win could set up a high-stakes encounter with Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, a pair that has often posed a challenge for the Indians.

P.V. Sindhu Looks to Bounce Back

Two-time Olympic medallist and 2019 World Champion P.V. Sindhu will be hoping to turn around a challenging year marked by injury and early tournament exits. A hamstring injury in February ruled her out of the Asia Team Championships, and subsequent losses to emerging players have tested her resolve.

With new Indonesian coach Irwansyah Adi Pratama supporting her comeback, Sindhu’s first match pits her against former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan, a rival with whom she shares a fiercely competitive history. A victory here would see Sindhu face Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong next.

Other Indian Contenders

In the women’s singles, young talents like Anupama Upadhyaya, Rakshitha Sree Ramraj, and Malvika Bansod will test their mettle against strong opponents from Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia, respectively.

In men’s singles, 2023 World Championships bronze medallist H.S. Prannoy aims to regain form against Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan. Lakshya Sen, also a World Championships bronze medallist, battles back from injury to face world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi of China, while Kiran George faces a tough challenge from former world champion Loh Kean Yew.

Doubles and Mixed Doubles Line-up

Women’s doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, recovering from injury, open against Japan’s strong duo Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto.

India also fields four mixed doubles pairs — Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto, Rohan Kapoor/Ruthvika Gadde Shivani, Sathish Karunakaran/Aadya Variyath, and Ashith Surya/Amrutha Pramuthesh — each aiming to make an impact.
