Violence in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to escalate despite a ceasefire agreement brokered between the warring Sunni and Shia tribes. On Tuesday, 10 more people were killed and 21 others injured in the ongoing sectarian clashes that have gripped the region. The latest violence follows a series of deadly attacks, including the tragic Thursday attack on a convoy of passenger vans near Parachinar, which left 47 people dead. While a ceasefire was brokered on Sunday, the violence persists, with clashes continuing in areas like Ghozaghari, Matasanagar, and Kunj Alizai.

Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud confirmed that the death toll in the past week has reached 100, with 180 people injured. In an attempt to calm tensions, the ceasefire has been extended for another 10 days, and peace talks are ongoing. Local authorities have announced plans to have police and army personnel stationed in the district to maintain order while mediation efforts are strengthened.

The sectarian violence traces its roots to both historical tensions and a land dispute between the Alizai and Bagan tribes. Despite Pakistan’s Shia minority (about 15% of the population) generally coexisting peacefully with the Sunni majority, Kurram district has long been a flashpoint for sectarian violence. Past conflicts have been exacerbated by militant groups targeting the Shia minority, and the latest wave of violence highlights the fragile nature of the peace that exists in the region.

In an effort to bring about lasting peace, a new tribal jirga (council) will be dispatched to Kurram to mediate the conflict. The delegation, led by the Kohat division Commissioner, will consist of elders from the Hangu, Orakzai, and Kohat districts and is expected to play a crucial role in resolving the tribal violence that continues to claim lives and destabilize the region.
