In the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, security measures in Delhi have been significantly ramped up. The Union Home Ministry issued a directive for mock drills in major cities, prompting the Delhi Police to intensify their preparedness across the national capital.

As per sources from PTI, senior officials, including Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), have been conducting multiple strategic meetings with Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) and Station House Officers (SHOs) to ensure maximum security across districts. Day and night patrols have already been enhanced, especially at Delhi’s borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Paramilitary forces have also been deployed in conjunction with local police to prevent any untoward incidents.

According to a senior Delhi Police officer, the overarching goal is to uphold law and order and ensure public safety by executing field-level deployment strategies. These efforts are being personally supervised by district DCPs, who are actively engaging with their teams to implement optimal resource use at the ground level. This hands-on supervision is also designed to boost operational efficiency and enable rapid resolution of on-ground challenges.

In key parts of the city such as Connaught Place, India Gate, Janpath, Yashwant Palace, and Gole Market, foot patrolling has been significantly increased. These are areas considered vital installations and high-density zones that are vulnerable during heightened alert phases. To support these patrols, motorcycle units and specialized police pickets have been activated. These provide a visible and mobile presence in areas prone to congestion or security breaches.

As part of the security operations, interactive policing has been introduced. Here, beat officers are engaging directly with shopkeepers, commuters, and residents to listen to their concerns and raise their awareness. This community policing model not only builds trust but also ensures that suspicious activity can be reported swiftly.

For the upcoming mock drills, the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and dog squads will be deployed in crowded areas like Palika Bazaar, Janpath, Khan Market, and locations near government buildings. These areas will undergo frequent anti-sabotage checks to minimize threats.

Further anti-terror measures have been rolled out, including comprehensive vehicle checks at multiple pickets across the city. The police are particularly focusing on rental and unregistered vehicles, which could potentially be misused for unlawful activities. Any anomalies are being reported immediately to senior officers.

To extend the security grid, meetings are also being held with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Market Welfare Associations (MWAs), and nagarik suraksha samitis. In these meetings, the Delhi Police is briefing local stakeholders on the need for continuous vigilance. Members have been urged to report any suspicious behaviour or unattended objects without delay.

Additionally, private security guards, particularly those posted at vital installations and sensitive zones, are being trained and briefed. Their role as the first line of surveillance in their respective premises is being emphasized, and they are being advised to stay in direct contact with senior police officials.

The overarching objective behind these measures is to create a layered, interactive, and intelligence-driven security system that can respond quickly to threats while also deterring possible attacks through heightened visibility and preparedness.

These developments come amid rising military and diplomatic tensions with Pakistan. The Indian security establishment remains on high alert, with cross-border cyber intrusions and threats of further attacks adding to the gravity of the situation.

It is noteworthy that the Delhi Police’s proactive approach reflects a broader national trend of preparedness and community engagement in the face of evolving security challenges. By deploying a mix of traditional security practices and modern community-policing methods, authorities aim to reassure the public while deterring any attempts to destabilize peace in the national capital.

With mock drills set to begin shortly, the focus will be on response coordination, resource allocation, and public alertness. The real-time simulations will help agencies assess their readiness and identify any operational gaps that need addressing. In today’s climate, such preventive strategies are no longer optional—they are an essential part of modern urban governance and counter-terror operations.

As the capital remains under tight surveillance, authorities continue to urge citizens to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate fully with law enforcement efforts to keep the city safe.
