U.S. markets closed mixed on July 18; Indian banking stocks led today’s bounce amid volatile global cues
After opening on a weak note, Indian stock markets rebounded smartly on July 21, 2025, with benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty recovering losses led by buying in heavyweights like ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank. The reversal in sentiment was also supported by positive trends in key Asian markets, including South Korea’s Kospi and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, along with stable global cues.
The Sensex, which had fallen over 300 points in early trade, reversed course to trade higher by over 150 points, while the Nifty reclaimed key levels above 23,900, supported by renewed strength in banking, auto, and FMCG stocks.
Banking Majors Steal the Show
The biggest drivers of the market rebound were ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank, which saw strong institutional buying interest. These two private sector giants alone contributed over 250 points to the Sensex recovery.
-
ICICI Bank rose over 2.1% intraday, following reports of higher credit growth in the June quarter and improving margins in the retail lending segment.
-
HDFC Bank gained around 1.8%, as analysts maintained a bullish outlook on the lender following recent block deals and positive commentary in investor calls.
Market experts believe that investors are rotating back into quality large-cap names, especially in the financial space, after weeks of consolidation.
“The bounce in ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank acted as a trigger for broader recovery. With global markets not showing extreme weakness, Indian equities are again becoming attractive to FIIs,” said Devansh Mehta, Senior Analyst at Kotak Securities.
Sectoral Indices Turn Positive
Following the recovery in blue-chip stocks, Nifty Bank surged over 1.1%, pulling the benchmark index along. Other sectoral indices that showed strength included:
-
Nifty Auto, led by gains in Bajaj Auto and Mahindra & Mahindra
-
Nifty FMCG, driven by ITC and Hindustan Unilever
-
Nifty Realty, buoyed by DLF and Godrej Properties
Meanwhile, IT and metals remained under pressure, with stocks like Infosys, TCS, and Tata Steel dragging due to global demand concerns.
Asian Markets Provide Support
The recovery in Indian markets was aided by positive cues from Asia, where most indices traded in the green despite lingering global macroeconomic uncertainty.
-
South Korea’s Kospi rose over 0.7%, driven by tech and battery stocks
-
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 0.5%, recovering from previous losses linked to Chinese real estate fears
-
Japan’s Nikkei, however, remained under mild pressure after a mixed corporate earnings season
This followed a mixed close on Wall Street on July 18, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended slightly higher, while the Nasdaq slipped due to pressure on tech stocks like Tesla and Nvidia.
Domestic Cues Remain Cautiously Optimistic
Back home, the market remains watchful of key domestic and global developments:
-
Corporate earnings are underway, and results from major firms including Reliance Industries and Axis Bank are scheduled this week
-
Monsoon activity across India remains favourable, lifting sentiment in agriculture-linked sectors
-
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been net buyers in recent sessions, signaling improved confidence
However, concerns persist around oil prices, which are hovering near $83 per barrel, and any further spike could impact inflation and currency levels.
Expert Views
Market strategists suggest that while today’s recovery is a positive sign, volatility may persist in the short term due to macroeconomic crosswinds.
“We are in the middle of earnings season and macroeconomic commentary from global central banks will shape near-term direction. Investors should stick with fundamentally strong names,” said Anita Chawla, Head of Equity Strategy at JM Financial.
Technical analysts also noted that the Nifty’s bounce from 23,720 support zone was encouraging, and a sustained move above 23,950-24,000 would be crucial to confirm bullish continuation.
Outlook for the Week
Looking ahead, the key events to watch include:
-
Earnings announcements from Reliance, HUL, and Bajaj Finserv
-
U.S. economic data including GDP estimates and jobless claims
-
Movement in global crude oil prices and dollar index
-
Any update from the U.S. Federal Reserve or other central banks
The market may also react to developments around geopolitical tensions, including Iran nuclear talks and Russia’s ongoing discussions with Middle East powers, which could impact global risk sentiment.
For now, the bounce-back in Indian equities reflects resilience in domestic macros and the ability of banking heavyweights to anchor market stability during periods of uncertainty.
The Upcoming IPOs in this week and coming weeks are Sellowrap Industries, Repono, Shanti Gold International, Indiqube Spaces, GNG Electronics, Brigade Hotel Ventures, Patel Chem Specialities, Monarch Surveyors & Engineering Consultants, TSC India, NSDL.
The Current active IPO are Swastika Castal, Savy Infra.
