Serum Institute Sends First Batch of Malaria Vaccine to Africa

In a significant step toward combating this devastating illness, the Serum Institute of India (SII) has shipped the first batch of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine to Africa. This initial shipment includes 43,200 doses, with 163,800 doses designated for the Central African Region. Following this, countries such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo are next in line to receive the vaccine.

Global Effort and Collaboration

The R21/Matrix-M vaccine is a product of over three decades of research and development at the University of Oxford's Jenner Institute, in collaboration with Novavax’s Matrix-M adjuvant. The project has been significantly supported by the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), the Wellcome Trust, and the European Investment Bank (EIB). In October of last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the vaccine for use in children, marking it as a pivotal advancement in the global fight against malaria.

A Complement to Existing Vaccines

This vaccine joins the ranks of GSK’s RTS, S/AS01E malaria vaccine, which is also produced by Bharat Biotech in India. Together, these vaccines represent a unified global effort to reduce the mortality and morbidity caused by malaria, particularly in high-risk populations. The introduction of the R21/Matrix-M vaccine is a testament to the advancements in medical science and international cooperation aimed at addressing this critical public health issue.

Scaling Up Production

While the vaccine is not yet available in India, SII has already produced 25 million doses and has the capability to scale up production to 100 million doses annually. The institute anticipates that the vaccine will be available in India within the next 2-4 years, pending further approvals and logistical arrangements.
