Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar faction) chief Sharad Pawar has strongly supported the Congress’ demand for a special session of Parliament to deliberate on the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which left 26 tourists dead. Speaking from Thane after participating in a religious ceremony, Pawar underlined the need for unity among all political parties in the face of such national tragedies.
Call for National Unity Amidst Tragedy
Pawar referred to the Pahalgam attack as a blow to the entire nation, not just to a specific community or region. According to him, calling a special session of Parliament would send a strong message to the world that India stands united against terrorism, irrespective of political ideologies.
“The entire country is united on this issue. A special session would be useful to send this message to the world,” he said.
Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi had earlier urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the incident and showcase the country's resolve.
A Non-Partisan Approach to Terror
Pawar, who previously served as Defence Minister of India, emphasized that political, religious, and linguistic divisions should not dilute the national response to such heinous acts.
“Religion, caste, and language should not be brought into such matters,” he stated, pledging his full support to any step that the Prime Minister and his colleagues may take.
His remarks reflected a mature and responsible political stand, aimed at ensuring cooperation across party lines during a time of national grief.
Details of the Pahalgam Terror Attack
The terror attack took place on April 22, near the popular tourist spot of Pahalgam in Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir. Terrorists opened fire on tourists relaxing at a scenic meadow, resulting in 26 deaths and multiple injuries.
The victims were mostly domestic tourists, highlighting the growing threat of terror activities aimed at disrupting peace and tourism in the Valley.
This massacre, among the worst in recent times, has led to widespread condemnation and calls for strong action against the perpetrators and their handlers.
Sharad Pawar’s Support to PM Modi on National Security
Significantly, despite being a senior opposition leader, Pawar expressed unwavering support for any steps taken by the central government to tackle terrorism.
“We will give complete support to whatever steps Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his colleagues take,” he added.
This statement stands out as a rare moment of bipartisan consensus in India’s often polarised political landscape.
Religious Visits and Media Criticism
During the press interaction, Pawar was also asked whether he selectively attends religious events. In response, he dismissed the criticism as a “half-truth” and recalled his visits to prominent temples like Pandharpur and Tulja Bhavani during his tenure as Maharashtra Chief Minister.
“When I was the chief minister of Maharashtra, I had performed ‘pooja’ at Pandharpur temple multiple times,” he said.
His statement aimed at countering narratives that question his secular or religious engagement based on his political image.
A Word on Thackeray Cousins: Raj and Uddhav
The veteran leader also addressed questions about a possible reunion between Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.
“If it happens, it’s for the good. When two families come together, it is always a positive development,” Pawar commented.
His words hinted at the changing political equations in Maharashtra ahead of upcoming elections, and the growing prospect of opposition unity against the ruling alliance.
Opposition Unity in Times of Crisis
This incident has become a rallying point for several opposition parties, urging the government to show greater sensitivity and unity. Leaders across the political spectrum believe that national security concerns must override political rivalries, and that the Parliament is the right platform to discuss such pressing issues.
Sharad Pawar's timely and firm endorsement of a special session has bolstered the Congress’ appeal and set a precedent for cross-party cooperation.
Conclusion: United Stand Against Terrorism
Sharad Pawar’s statements serve as a reminder of the importance of unity and maturity in politics, especially when the nation is facing terror threats. His support to the Prime Minister, willingness to back Congress’ call, and emphasis on national integrity over identity politics all underscore his stature as a seasoned statesman.
As India deals with the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, this show of solidarity could be the first step towards a more cohesive and strong response to terrorism.
