  • India maintains Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part and peace is possible only without terrorism.
  • Shehbaz Sharif criticizes India's military build-up and urges diplomatic engagement.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated his government's stance on resolving issues with India through diplomatic means. Speaking at a special session of the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) Legislative Assembly in Muzaffarabad on Kashmir Solidarity Day, he urged New Delhi to engage in talks and abandon the post-August 5, 2019 mindset, referring to India's revocation of Article 370.

Sharif emphasized that Pakistan wants peace and is willing to settle disputes through discussions. However, he called on India to honor its commitments to the United Nations regarding Kashmir and resume meaningful negotiations.

Reference to the Lahore Declaration

The Pakistan PM highlighted the Lahore Declaration of 1999, a peace agreement signed between then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistan’s Nawaz Sharif. He stressed that diplomatic engagement is the only way forward for both nations.

He stated, "India should come out of the thinking of August 5, 2019, and fulfill the promises made to the UN. Dialogue is the only solution."

India's Stand on Kashmir

India has consistently reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh, are integral parts of India. The Indian government maintains that normal diplomatic ties with Pakistan are only possible if there is an environment free from terrorism, hostility, and violence.

New Delhi has also dismissed Pakistan’s repeated calls for international intervention, stating that Kashmir is an internal matter and any discussions will be held bilaterally without external influence.

India-Pakistan Relations Post-Article 370

The revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, which ended Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and divided the state into two Union Territories, further strained diplomatic relations.

Pakistan strongly opposed the move and downgraded diplomatic ties with India. Since then, bilateral relations have remained tense, with limited engagement.

Shehbaz Sharif Criticizes India's Military Build-Up

During his speech, Sharif accused India of amassing weapons, stating that such actions do not contribute to regional peace. He remarked that India’s military expansion "will not change the fate of the people of this region" and urged India to "choose peace over hostility."

The Path to Peace and Stability

While tensions persist, experts believe that reviving diplomatic channels could improve relations. However, India's stance remains firm that terrorism must end before any meaningful dialogue can take place.
