In a recent exchange of sharp words between the Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, Chouhan criticized Atishi for her government's failure to implement farmer-friendly schemes proposed by the central government. In a letter to Atishi dated January 1, Chouhan expressed his deep concern over the plight of farmers in Delhi. According to Chouhan, the farmers of Delhi were "upset" and "worried" due to the non-implementation of various schemes that were meant to improve their condition.
In his letter, Chouhan expressed his sadness, stating, "You have never made appropriate decisions in the interest of farmers in Delhi" and went on to accuse the Delhi government of preventing the implementation of central government schemes that could have benefitted the farmers. He pointed out that, despite earlier correspondence raising these concerns, the issues affecting farmers remained unresolved, and Delhi farmers continued to be deprived of the benefits that could have been availed under these schemes.
Furthermore, Chouhan targeted Delhi’s former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of exploiting the issue of farmers' welfare for political gain. Chouhan remarked that Kejriwal, instead of focusing on public welfare, used to focus on personal issues, particularly before elections. The central minister’s comments added fuel to the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and the AAP.
The Delhi Chief Minister Atishi didn’t hold back in her response. In a fiery retort, Atishi compared BJP's statements about farmers' welfare to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim preaching about non-violence, calling it ironic and hypocritical. She accused the BJP of politicizing the issue of farmers' welfare and shifting the focus away from actual concerns. She further slammed the BJP-led government for the ongoing farmers' protest in Punjab, stating that the condition of farmers had never been as bad as during the BJP's rule.
Atishi also referenced the BJP’s treatment of farmers during the 2019 farmers' protests, where reports of violence against farmers surfaced, including incidents of bullets and lathi charges. According to Atishi, the BJP’s focus on politics was hindering real solutions to the agriculture sector's problems, particularly when it came to addressing the welfare and well-being of farmers.
As the political tensions continue to rise in the run-up to the Delhi Assembly elections 2024, farmers’ welfare remains a central issue. With both parties fiercely debating their roles in addressing the needs of farmers, the issue continues to fuel much of the political discourse in the city.
