The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, whose body was discovered in a deep gorge near Sohra (Cherrapunji), Meghalaya, has turned into a national headline due to the alleged involvement of his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, and her lover, Raj Kushwaha. The crime, marked by betrayal, deceit, and a web of conspirators, has shocked the nation and sparked public outrage.

The Tragic Discovery

On June 2, 2025, police discovered Raja’s body in a gorge near Sohra, a picturesque but remote location in Meghalaya. His wife Sonam, initially missing, was later found wandering near a dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road, raising suspicion and triggering a deeper investigation.

The Love Triangle Behind the Crime

According to Vipin Raghuvanshi, Raja’s elder brother, Sonam had long been in a relationship with Raj Kushwaha, a man employed at her family's Sunmica business. Raj was reportedly a 12th-grade dropout who worked as an accountant. Despite objections from her family, who insisted that she marry within the community, Sonam confided in her mother that she was in love with Raj.

Vipin claims that when Sonam was forced to marry Raja, she ominously warned her mother:

“Wherever I get married, whatever happens afterward, I will not be responsible for it.”

This chilling statement has now gained horrifying relevance in the context of the murder.

The Conspiracy and Execution

Meghalaya Police have alleged that Sonam and Raj Kushwaha conspired to murder Raja. Their plan involved hiring three hitmen—Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand—who allegedly executed the plan to kill Raja.

The murder was not spontaneous but the result of a calculated plot, hatched in advance with the aim of eliminating Raja. Authorities believe Sonam staged her disappearance to mislead investigators and create a false narrative of abduction or mental trauma.

Accused Sent to Transit Remand

Police have arrested four key accused so far:

  • Akash Rajput

  • Vishal Singh Chauhan

  • Raj Singh Kushwaha (alleged lover)

  • Anand

These individuals have been sent to seven-day transit remand for further investigation. The remand allows Meghalaya Police to question them thoroughly and piece together the sequence of events.

Vipin Raghuvanshi believes that more than five people may be involved, indicating the possibility of a larger network or deeper conspiracy behind the murder.

Victim’s Family Demands Justice

Uma Raghuvanshi, mother of the deceased, has come forward demanding the strictest punishment for the accused. Her emotional plea has drawn public sympathy:

“I want justice for my son. The accused should be hanged. I believe more people are involved. One person alone couldn’t have done all this.”

Her statement echoes the public sentiment, with many demanding capital punishment and swift legal action.

Sonam’s Background and Family Business

The Raghuvanshi family operates a Sunmica (laminated sheets) business, where the alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, was employed. His role in the family business gave him close access to Sonam, and their relationship blossomed despite social and familial barriers.

Sonam’s decision to marry Raja under family pressure and the subsequent murder raises serious questions about honour, autonomy, and the consequences of forced relationships.

Legal Framework and Investigation

The case is being investigated under Indian Penal Code provisions for murder, conspiracy, and abetment. With the arrests made and statements from family members, police are trying to establish a concrete timeline and motive.

The focus now lies on retrieving digital evidence, analyzing call records, and possibly obtaining a confession or statement under Section 164 of CrPC to legally bind the accused.

Public Reaction and Media Spotlight

News of the brutal murder and alleged betrayal by a wife and her lover has gone viral across India. Social media platforms are buzzing with outrage, sympathy for the Raghuvanshi family, and calls for justice.

The case has also renewed debates around:

  • Love versus arranged marriages

  • Freedom of choice in Indian households

  • Crimes of passion and psychological motives

What Lies Ahead?

With the investigation still in progress, the next few days will be crucial. If police manage to uncover more names or motives, the case could escalate, involving more arrests and possibly charges under organized crime laws.

For now, the case stands as a grim reminder that relationships built on deception and coercion can end in tragedy. As the nation watches closely, all eyes are on the judiciary and police to ensure justice is served swiftly and rightly.
