What's covered under the Article:

  1. Shubman Gill and KL Rahul made significant jumps in the latest ICC Test rankings after scoring centuries.

  2. Ravindra Jadeja slipped out of the top 10 bowlers after a poor performance in the Leeds Test.

  3. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jasprit Bumrah continue to hold their top positions among batters and bowlers.

The latest ICC Test rankings have brought both positives and setbacks for Indian cricket fans. While batters Shubman Gill and KL Rahul made substantial progress in the updated rankings thanks to their centuries against England in the Leeds Test, Ravindra Jadeja dropped out of the top 10 bowlers after a lacklustre performance with the ball. The match may have ended in defeat for India, but several of its top-order players showed outstanding resilience that reflected in the updated rankings.

Despite the loss in the first Test against England at Headingley, Indian batsmen shone with centuries, pushing their ICC standings higher. Shubman Gill moved five spots up to 20th position in the ICC Test rankings for batters after scoring 147 runs in the first innings. However, he could only contribute 8 runs in the second innings. Still, this was enough to place him closer to the elite group of batters.

Another top performer was KL Rahul, who played an excellent innings in the second innings with a knock of 137 off 247 deliveries. Rahul had also scored 42 runs in the first innings, helping India set a challenging target of 371 runs for England. His contributions earned him a 10-place jump, taking him to 38th position in the rankings with 579 rating points.

While India failed to defend their total in the final innings, the batting department showed promising form, indicating a strong line-up for the remaining matches in the Test series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Holds Strong at No. 4

Yashasvi Jaiswal, India’s young opening sensation, continues to impress, holding onto the 4th spot in the ICC Test rankings for batters with 851 rating points. His 101-run innings in the first innings at Leeds once again reaffirmed his place among the world's elite cricketers. Though he had a low score in the second innings, his consistency keeps him within reach of the top position.

Meanwhile, Joe Root of England, who played a crucial unbeaten knock in the final innings to steer England to victory, consolidated his top position with 889 rating points. But with Jaiswal’s form on the rise, the battle for the No. 1 spot remains intense.

England's Ben Duckett Breaks Into Top 10

England opener Ben Duckett delivered a match-winning knock of 149 runs in the second innings, helping his side chase down a massive total of 371. His heroic performance has earned him a place among the top 10 batters in Test cricket for the first time in his career. With 787 rating points, Duckett now holds the 8th position, marking a career-high for the Englishman.

Ravindra Jadeja Drops, Bumrah Stays On Top

The bowling rankings, however, brought disappointment for Ravindra Jadeja, who struggled throughout the match in Leeds. Jadeja bowled 52 overs in the match, giving away 172 runs and picking up only one wicket, resulting in his fall to the 13th position in the ICC Test rankings for bowlers with 706 rating points.

On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah continued to showcase his bowling brilliance. Although he went wicketless in the second innings, his five-wicket haul in the first innings helped him retain the top position in the ICC Test bowling rankings with 907 rating points. Bumrah’s performance remains crucial for India’s chances in the upcoming matches of the series.

ICC Rankings Overview – June 2025

  • Shubman Gill: Jumped 5 places to 20th among Test batters

  • KL Rahul: Jumped 10 places to 38th with 579 rating points

  • Yashasvi Jaiswal: Remains 4th with 851 points

  • Ben Duckett: Entered top 10, now 8th with 787 points

  • Ravindra Jadeja: Slips to 13th among Test bowlers

  • Jasprit Bumrah: Maintains No. 1 position with 907 rating points

India’s Batting Strength vs Bowling Concerns

The Leeds Test highlighted a recurring issue for Team India — batting resilience without bowling depth. While the batters like Gill, Jaiswal, and Rahul stood up with big scores, the bowling unit, excluding Bumrah, couldn’t contain England’s counter-attack in the fourth innings. This allowed England to chase a mammoth total and exposed the inexperience and ineffectiveness of India’s spin department, with Jadeja failing to leave a mark.

Looking Ahead: Crucial Tests Await

As the Test series continues, the pressure is mounting on India to restructure their bowling strategy while maintaining the form of their top-order batters. The latest ICC Test rankings, with multiple Indian players climbing up the ladder, reflect the team’s potential, but also expose the urgent need to strengthen their bowling attack if they are to level the series.

Cricket fans will be keenly watching the next Test to see whether Jaiswal can surpass Joe Root, whether Gill and Rahul maintain their upward trajectory, and how the bowlers respond under pressure. With England now leading the series, India will need a combined effort from both departments to stay in contention.

The ICC Test rankings June 2025 update sends a strong message: India’s batting is thriving, but without Jadeja’s effectiveness and support for Bumrah, their bowling attack needs immediate reinforcement. The road ahead is challenging, but with the form shown by key players, India’s hopes are far from over.
