Key Points:
Shyam Rajak rejoined JD(U) on September 1, 2024, after a four-year hiatus, having resigned from RJD.
Rajak cited dissatisfaction with RJD’s internal dynamics and lack of opportunities as reasons for his departure from the party.
He expressed his intention to work under Nitish Kumar’s leadership and seek political opportunities in the upcoming Bihar elections.
On September 1, 2024, Shyam Rajak, a prominent political figure and former leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), made headlines by rejoining the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)]. This move comes after a four-year gap, during which Rajak had been a significant presence in the RJD.
Earlier in August 2024, Rajak made a high-profile exit from RJD, announcing his resignation through a letter posted on X. He stepped down from both his primary membership and his role as national general secretary. In his resignation letter, Rajak poignantly reflected on his departure, noting, "I was not fond of playing chess, hence got cheated, you kept playing your moves, I kept caring about our relationship," highlighting his discontent with the party’s internal politics.
Rajak’s return to JD(U) marks a notable shift in Bihar's political landscape. He was previously expelled from JD(U) in August 2020 due to anti-party activities while serving as Industry Minister of Bihar. Following his expulsion, Rajak joined RJD in the presence of Opposition Leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, seeking to contribute to the party’s agenda. However, his tenure with RJD was fraught with challenges. Rajak openly criticized the RJD leadership, accusing them of converting socialism into “dynasty politics and corruption,” which he felt obstructed the developmental efforts led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
A significant factor in Rajak’s decision to leave RJD was his perceived lack of recognition and reward for his contributions. In the 2020 Assembly elections, the Phulwarisharif (reserved) seat he previously represented was allocated to an ally party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation. Similarly, his aspiration to contest from the Samastipur Lok Sabha (reserved) seat in the 2024 elections was thwarted as it was given to the Congress party within the alliance.
Rajak’s rejoining JD(U) reflects his ongoing commitment to Bihar’s political dynamics and his desire to work under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. As the 2025 Assembly elections approach, the Phulwarisharif seat is expected to be allocated to the alliance partner who won the last election, prompting Rajak to return to JD(U) to position himself favorably for future political opportunities.
This strategic move underscores Rajak's intention to realign with JD(U) and seek guidance from Kumar, aiming to contribute effectively to the party’s goals and the broader development agenda in Bihar.
