Siddaramaiah dares BJP leaders to a public debate on economy and accuses Modi of causing price rise and injustice in fund allocation
In a direct counter to the BJP’s criticism regarding the financial condition of the Karnataka government, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on June 16, 2025, launched a massive ₹1,350 crore worth of development projects in Davangere. The move was explicitly presented as a rebuttal to claims made by the opposition that the Congress-led State government was incapable of funding development due to a financial crunch.
Addressing a public gathering in Davangere, Siddaramaiah said,
“We are taking development to people’s doorsteps. BJP leaders allege that we have no money. If that is true, how are we launching development projects worth ₹1,350 crore in a single day?”
Targeting BJP’s Allegations
The Chief Minister took the opportunity to not only showcase the fiscal strength of his government but also to launch a political attack on the BJP.
“They say there is no money. But we are distributing benefits, launching projects and empowering people across castes and communities.”
He mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating,
“What is the use of a 56-inch chest if there is no concern or compassion for the poor and middle class?”
Siddaramaiah pointed out that the opposition cannot see the progress being made in the State.
“BJP fails to see our initiatives. But the people see it — because we bring visible changes to their lives.”
Strong Economic Performance
Highlighting Karnataka’s fiscal performance, Siddaramaiah said the State’s economy was robust, pointing out that:
-
Karnataka is second in the country in GST collections, a testimony to the strength of its economy.
-
The State budget has increased, and welfare spending continues without compromise.
-
Contrary to BJP’s accusations, development work continues at full speed.
Housing and Social Welfare Achievements
Taking a direct dig at BJP’s record, the CM said,
“During their rule, the BJP did not build a single house for the poor. We have already given 1,892 houses to pourakarmikas in Davangere district alone.”
The pourakarmikas — sanitation workers — are among the most marginalised sections of society. By allocating nearly 2,000 houses to them, the Congress government is attempting to send a strong signal of inclusive development and welfare.
Upholding Ambedkar’s Ideals
Siddaramaiah stated that his government was working as per the vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, ensuring that fiscal empowerment is extended across all castes and communities.
“We believe in social justice. Our schemes and governance models are inspired by the idea that every individual deserves opportunity and dignity.”
This remark underscores the Congress party’s traditional support base among marginalised communities, and an attempt to consolidate those votes ahead of future elections.
Direct Attack on Prime Minister Modi
Siddaramaiah did not mince words when it came to criticising the Prime Minister, saying,
“Narendra Modi is the reason behind rising prices in the country. I ask you — have you seen the Achhe Din he promised?”
He accused the BJP-led central government of failing the common man, especially in areas such as inflation, jobs, and fuel prices.
He reiterated that Karnataka has not received fair treatment from the Union government when it comes to funds and grants.
Centre-State Injustice
The CM strongly criticised the injustice meted out to Karnataka by the Central Government in fiscal allocations, and issued a public declaration:
“If I have spoken even a word of lie about the injustice Karnataka has faced at the hands of the Centre, I will not speak from a public platform again.”
This assertion is likely to resonate with voters who feel that southern States are being discriminated against in Central schemes and funding.
Challenge to BJP Leaders
In a fiery culmination of his speech, Siddaramaiah challenged BJP leaders to an open debate:
“I dare BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra and Leader of Opposition R. Ashok to debate me publicly on the issues of development and economic performance.”
This challenge is aimed at putting the BJP on the defensive and portraying the Congress government as confident and transparent in its performance.
Presence of Senior Leaders
The Chief Minister was accompanied by key members of his cabinet and other elected officials during the programme. Those present included:
-
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar
-
Minister for Home Dr. G. Parameshwar
-
Minister S.S. Mallikarjun
-
Davangere MP Dr. Prabha Mallikarjun
-
Various MLAs, MLCs, and district-level officers
The event also involved distribution of benefits under several government schemes — symbolising the Congress government’s focus on delivering last-mile benefits.
Political Significance
This event and speech are significant in the context of:
-
Upcoming elections and increasing BJP-Congress rivalry in Karnataka.
-
The Congress’ need to project fiscal credibility amid opposition allegations.
-
The ongoing Centre-State tensions, particularly regarding fund allocations.
-
Reassertion of welfare politics with visible, ground-level outcomes like housing and cash transfers.
Conclusion
Siddaramaiah’s launch of ₹1,350 crore worth of development projects in Davangere is more than a policy announcement — it is a political statement. With strong words against the BJP and PM Modi, and a confident display of economic strength, the Karnataka CM has drawn clear battle lines ahead of future electoral contests.
His emphasis on social justice, inclusive development, and regional pride, coupled with performance metrics like GST ranking, is designed to counter BJP’s narrative and reinforce the Congress’ image as a party of action and accountability.
As the political temperature rises in Karnataka, events like this are likely to shape the narrative and momentum leading into the next electoral cycle.
